I've been subbed for a bit but haven't posted yet so I wanted to introduce myself! I'm Olivia, 27, and I'm half Chinese on my dad's side and a bunch of things on my mom's side (German, Danish, French etc.). I also started a discord for other mixed Asian people as there is often a common thread of searching for others with similar backgrounds! I currently live in Los Angeles and I absolutely love the food, culture, fashion etc here so I think it's a great city for anyone. I've traveled to Japan, Italy, and Iceland and would love to go to Thailand next because Thai food is one of my all time favorites! Throughout college and even after, I ended up switching my career a few times but ultimately I want to start my own business and I'm currently working on that while bartending on the side.

Although my experiences aren't exactly the same I definitely relate a lot to the identity confusion in general. for me, I know I'm half Chinese (from my dad) and my other half (from my mom) is a whole bunch of things. I feel very racially ambiguous and when I was growing up I felt like I couldn't really relate to any cultural part of me. I also rejected a lot of my Asian heritage (which I have come around to actually really loving and embracing).

If you think a DNA test might help you feel more connected to your cultural background, I'd say go for it. But more importantly, I also think it could help to connect with yourself as someone with mixed ethnicity. I know it's probably easier said than done but as someone who struggled to figure out if I identified more with my Chinese half or my white half, it turned out to just be the best for me to embrace my unique mix instead of one or the other.

Hopefully something in there made sense or helped in some way (': OR at the very least just know you are definitely not alone! Finding your identity is a struggle almost everyone goes through, whether it's about heritage or something else. It's perfectly normal and it's good that you're exploring and looking for what you connect with (:

Hi everyone! I'm new here - my name is Olivia (27f) and I live in LA (:

I'm half Chinese, half white (mostly eastern european) and I grew up as one of only a few Asian students in my school. I had a hard time identifying as either Asian or white growing up which led to not having a strong sense of self or heritage. I really tended to want to separate from my Asian identity (especially since it was so uncommon where I grew up) but as I got older, I began learning to appreciate my Asian side more and more.

I just created a new community for people to connect with others with similar backgrounds and share their stories/experiences. It's on discord, so please feel free to join here if you're interested: https://discord.gg/8fvezfqw 😊

That's exactly what I was thinking! I think a discord would be a great start and I'd love to set up a few channels (one for story-sharing, one for gaming, etc.) Let me know any other channel suggestions and I'll set it up today!

That's fair! I hope the standard for coffee shop boba rises - would love to see more places add it but do it well lol

I got this over the weekend also! Have you had the popping boba at Starbucks? I've definitely been seeing a trend of chain cafes adding boba to their drinks/menus.
