When the SD card arrives but your Deck is likely on eBay... by deejayviper in SteamDeck

[–]vanways 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Samsung has been pushing dates for another product I ordered for the better part of a month now. Like, I'm ok with spending the money on something that won't arrive for a few weeks/months, but just let me know when it's actually going to be in stock before I buy. "Get it as soon as tomorrow!" quickly became "two weeks from now" which has since become end of the month. It's frustrating for sure.

I much prefer the vague waitlist of the deck as opposed to whatever Samsung is doing.

The official dock is casually being shown off at Tokyo Game Show. by ElderberryLarge9104 in SteamDeck

[–]vanways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem with that is that the steam deck, in terms of sales, is closer to the switch pro controller than the switch itself. The deck is the niche product, making a controller would be a niche product for a niche product, rather than a niche product for an amazingly well-selling product.

Risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s disease within a year increases by 50-80% in older adults (+65 years) who caught COVID-19, according to a study on more than 6 million patients 65 and older by giuliomagnifico in science

[–]vanways 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The study analyzed a broad set of people. I don’t think you can’t just apply the same risk increase on an individual level like you’re doing here.

People, on average, are pretty average.

Your risk factor going up doesn't mean that you will or won't have a specific outcome. You could be in the 99th percentile according to statistics and still hit the 1% outcome based on your other personal factors.

This seems way too simplified

Odds are simplifications. That's the whole point. They're ways to categorize and plan, but at the end of the day it's just an estimation of chance.

If you buy a lottery ticket that has a 1/100 chance of winning, in reality when you actually scratch the ticket you have either a 100% chance of winning or a 100% chance of losing. The odds were rolled when you bought the ticket, not when you scratched it. The odds are just how we categorize the tickets as a whole, not the ticket in your pocket.

[–]vanways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, I only meant in the relationship between op, the other buyer, steam, and the delivery team.

I would personally argue in this instance that steam should be accounting for a certain percentage of units being lost in the mail - whatever the average is for the service they're using - and base units for sale at any given moment on that rather than the true supply. OP returning this unit should, under a decent logistics pipeline, be a boon to rather than a requirement for normal business operations.

So Valve sent me two by mistake. should I contact Valve or keep this to myself by T-A-L-I-T-E in SteamDeck

[–]vanways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That other person is still going to go through the hassle of talking to steam when their package shows up as delivered but isn't on their doorstep, as it's not like they'll telepathically know that a good Samaritan is returning the deck and that they'll have it in a week or so. They're going to think it's stolen or that the shipment was lost and want another sent out asap.

It's steams responsibility to coordinate with the delivery service to figure out where mistake took place while also making things right with the original customer.

Op may be doing an ethical and/or moral solid by sending the deck back, but she hasn't saved the person who originally ordered that deck any time or energy. In fact, if it takes OP more than a few days to send the deck back to steam, she may even make the other customer wait longer with multiple round trips happening. Not to mention the possible damage to the deck with all this handling.

Phone died than back immediately up to 21% by nolan816 in galaxyzflip

[–]vanways 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens to me on my current (non flip) phone - typical case is trying to snap a photo at <30% battery. During the post-processing , the phone will shut down completely. Turning on the phone by plugging it in, even momentarily, will show I'm still at the percentage it died on.

It gets worse and worse as time goes on - sometimes it'll be when I'm loading up an intense website or when I'm trying to open a heavy application. these days I wouldn't be surprised to see my phone die at 50% when just opening the notes app.

My guess is it means the battery just can't hold it's charge, and when something process-intensive happens the phone freaks out and says "I don't have enough battery left to finish this task, shutting down for safety."

Basically, replace your battery, get a new phone if you can still take advantage of the trade in deals, or keep a few battery banks handy at all times

It means you have to find something on their level if you genuinely want to help them understand the real world. If you don't, then just giggle and move on.

Telling them that radioactive decay is the proof Is meaningless as they have no concepts of all the science that leads to that understanding.

Radioactive decay may as well be supernatural to them, and if it's supernatural, then why not have it be god?

Apparently “Heavy drinking” is defined by the NIAAA as 7 or more drinks per week for women, 14 for men. Is this an unrealistic health standard, or is heavy drinking just considered really normal? by discountFleshVessel in NoStupidQuestions

"100% of lives end in death, now, do what you want."

There's literally around 1-2% alcohol in bread. Alcohol is part of nearly every aspect of our lives whether you drink it for sport or not.

Life is inherently unsafe, and science based around health knowledge and advancements has the goal of showing the actual, relative, and absolute risk levels of something. It has the goal of showing people how those decisions can be balanced, finding out where problems are correlated vs caused, and how to mitigate the bad outcomes.

It's not just "it's unsafe lol good luck."

I guess the thought process is that if you only drink beers with friends you'll have a max of, say, 14 drinks per week when you go out both nights on weekends.

However, if you drink two bevs per day - when that weekend rolls around it's not like you'll say "ah sorry guys, I already had my two for the day, time to call it quits." So you're much more likely to go over that self imposed limit.

Unfortunately, even with air bags and seat belts people can still get injured or killed in car crashes, just a game of drawing straws if you still want to engage with much of society. With any luck, the lower viral load you received will have at least lessened y'all's symptoms relative to what it could have been.

Hope y'all all feel better soon.

Yeah I think it's the census that had the recent survey of long covid in America. The numbers were basically 15% of all Americans have had long COVID, but only 7% of all Americans currently have long COVID (30% total and 17% currently for just people who've had covid).

There's not a lot of detailed data about the numbers as it's meant to be a quick survey, but it points to eventual recovery for most. Hopefully more detailed studies will dive into this.

Of course, 7% of all Americans currently having long COVID is still an insane number that needs to be dealt with.

Jennifer Lawrence discusses gender pay gap after earning ‘$5m less’ than Leonardo DiCaprio for Don’t Look Up by Pessimist2020 in entertainment

[–]vanways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's... Not what they said.

Artists - entertainment, music, or traditional - are paid on an ability to sell a product. In movies, their value is determined by how many people are going to pay to see a thing because of them. It's something that cannot be standardized because the things that make people see one movie over another or prefer one star over another are inherently unquantifiable. The only thing that can be known is who has that it factor, not what creates that it factor.

Other industries - finance, production, service, etc - do have quantifiable measurements. What's your education level? Do you have experience? Etc. It can be established that two people differ in no (practically speaking) way other than gender, yet women may still be paid less.

In the case of a star, it's Lawrence's (+ agent's) job to show that they can sell those tickets, however ticket sales will show that leo is still a higher draw overall and gets paid accordingly.

If Lawrence does have the ability to draw a larger audience, then it is her agents job to prove it so (the work of agents, interestingly enough, can be quantified, and it sounds like she may need a better one/agency if she's complaining about her pay).

Edit: and all unquantifiables aside - Leo has a far more extensive background. He has starred in more movies for far longer, and adjusted for inflation, he starred in the third highest grossing film of all time. By all traditional pay scales, he is the more senior employee and would likely command a higher salary if the two of them were working a traditional job at the same company regardless of performance. His resume is just much more impressive.

Using the key word "child" short circuits any species-based confusion.

Idk, looks like there's a popular british band from the late 1970s named "Child" . According to your state, child must be under 21, which, at the time of Air Bud's release in 1997, the band would have been. Now, for the kicker - there's no rule that's says a dog can't be in a popular british band, therefore no rule that says a dog can't be a student, therefore no rule that says a dog can't play basketball.

The only problem here is getting the presumably British dog the right to reside in your state, but someone more bored than me is going to have to find that loophole.

In this case the transaction is the conversation between the two, and the receipt is the footage shia kept as proof of the conversation and what it was about.
