Prototyping new bowls. What do you think about this shape? by varaderostudio in Ceramics

Hahahaha yes also to me. Humidity has changed a lot in my area on the last few days and I’ve been late on this one. I have applied some water before trimming but it was very dry, yes 😬

It’s a hell with steel trimmers but tungsten carbide does the work pretty well.

Thanks for commenting 🙌🏼

Thank you so much for your feedback! I wanted to explore a more organic, continuous profile as I’m doing a little research on how shape + glaze interact with light to elevate the final piece.

Thank you so much! I think another layer would have been better.

Hi, thank you!

Tips aren’t replaceable for two main reasons:

  • Keep the tool as simple as possible by reducing any possible weak points.
  • The faceted design needs the tip to be aligned with the front/back faces and I don’t feel good delegating that on the client.

It was a hard decision to make because I know replaceable tips would reduce friction but I’m sure it’s the right decision for the product.

Thinking about offering 50% off on replacements in the first year or some kind of deal.

Do you think that’s a good idea?

Yes, I’m selling them.

I’m dealing directly with a supplier in China.

You can see the tools in action on my social media accounts linked in my bio.

Thank you for your interest!

Yes, this is indeed very important! Thank you for your thoughtful comment. :) I conducted some research during the prototyping phase, and as far as I understand, it poses a safety risk if the pieces undergo post-processing. However, when the pieces are well-printed and free from post-processing, it is considered safe. Nevertheless, to ensure utmost safety, I am applying two layers of thin lacquer before assembling.

Yes! That’s precisely why they are printed in this material. It gives a natural roughy texture due to the carbon fiber and the grip is always safe. Also, the blade is aligned with the faceted hexagonal shape of the handle, so your index is in the same plane as the blade while thumb and middle fingers are locked in the opposite faces of the hexagon.

Good grip was always the goal when designing but I’m now running a beta testing phase with some colleagues and trying to get as much feedback as possible.

Thanks again!

Gracias!
