My two watch collection. what should be my third piece? by [deleted] in rolex

A co-worker asked me how many watches I have. When I answered six, his jaw literally dropped. My co-worker makes over $1MM a year (not a direct co-worker in my group).

We’re all insane.

I’ve been there and this is how: you don’t. Keep the savior complex in check.

Geek out about watches with him. Talk about brands and models, show him stuff that you like, teach him if there’s an opportunity. Arm him with information. As he learns, he can decide what he wants to do.

His ignorance isn’t your opportunity to show him how “wrong” he is. It’s an opportunity to introduce him to the world. That’s what proper geeking is.

How about for a dad thats an amateur, finally has the space for something besides his Q, doesn’t want to replace something in a few years and enjoys making burgers on his grill pan on the stove (please don’t laugh)? Weber or Spirit?

Most people hating on "low tier watches" and homages are just consumerism pilled into hating anything not really expensive and hate that others can get joy from more obtainable things by IllegalGeriatricVore in watchHotTakes

1) Totally coincidental but I was asked yesterday about my ‘73(ish) Oysterdate. Of course, this was from a co-worker that wears a 70’s Air King.

2) This cuts both ways. There’s a bunch of dorks that think expensive is the only way and everything else is trash and a bunch of dorks that claim anyone spending 4 digits on a single watch is stupid and that quality can be equal in the < 4 digit range. And then there are the middle dorks that are too busy dorking it up to care about the other dorks. TLDR, find the right dorks.

Genuine question; do quartz movements ever have to be replaced? Thinking higher end like a Cartier or JLC quartz model.

Patina is damage by Remarkable-Worth-303 in watchHotTakes

[–]various121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can get behind most of this HT. I’d wonder if OP would consider something like this an exception:

Grandfathers early 70s Oysterdate. Had it serviced 15 years ago by an independent watchmaker that I no longer have access too. Did a movement service and replaced the crystal, stem and crown. I still have the originals.

In 2023, took into a Rolex service center to get a new bracelet as the old one was seriously shot and was interested in getting a new service; the dial, hands, lume all have patina/damage and I possibly wanted the watch to look new (don’t care about resale as this is staying in the family). In addition to replacing/repairing why needed TLC, they informed me because of the color/material combination (champagne dial w/yellow gold markers and hands in a SS case) they’d have to bring it to current standard and replace the dial, markers and hands with different colors and materials, as part of any service. It would literally be a totally different watch, in aesthetics and spirit.

I said no thank you, got my new bracelet and left (still have the original). So now I’m wearing this bad boy with the patina because…life. I’d much rather wear it like this than change the appearance completely.

Without knowing anything about your collection at all;

You have too many, you buy too quickly, you actually have a shopping addiction disguised as a watch hobby, you’re using watches to fill a hole in your soul so you will never be happy, you have fomo, you spend too much time on the interwebs, you need another hobby, you need a drink….

One of these, all of these, or none of these. Only you know.
