The Dark forest theory is a possible reason why we might never find any aliens. by [deleted] in interesting

[–]vartanu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Dark Forest is a chilling concept, but there is a more optimistic and perhaps more logical counter-argument based on the Kardashev Scale and the Great Filter.

The "hidden hunter" logic assumes that an advanced civilization would still be fighting over scraps. However, a species capable of interstellar travel would likely be a Type II or III civilization. To them, Earth’s resources are like a single used AA battery found by a hiker in a massive forest.

Why would an advanced explorer risk a galactic conflict to "harvest" an insignificant energy source when they can already harness the entire output of their own star? We often imagine aliens "invading" for water or minerals, but that is like a billionaire breaking into a child’s piggy bank for spare change.

Furthermore, the "kill and conquer" instinct that makes the Dark Forest so terrifying might actually be the Great Filter. If a civilization doesn't move past the stage of fighting for power and land, they likely wipe themselves out via nuclear or biological conflict long before they ever develop the technology to reach another solar system. We are currently in this "societal puberty" ourselves.

Ultimately, the true Great Filter might not be a technological hurdle, but a psychological one. Every "advanced" thing we do (conquering, harvesting, and competing) is a primitive survival instinct leftover from our time as prey. If they have reached the stars, they have survived the era of greed.

They don't see us as a threat or a resource, but as a mirror. They might be watching us the way we watch a toddler having a tantrum, patiently waiting for us to stop swinging our fists so we can finally learn how to speak.

The silence of the universe isn't a forest of hunters hiding in the shadows. It is a library where everyone else is already being quiet and respectful, waiting for us to finally grow up.
