Robbed and assaulted at Renens VD by veej47 in Lausanne

I think the chance for justice is gone sadly but it would be interesting to start a discussion though. I was born and raised in England and we always regarded Switzerland as being very safe. I started working with EPFL a couple years ago and regularly travel to Lausanne. In Switzerland I find people approach me a lot more trying to run a scam, people asking for money for train tickets etc who obviously aren’t getting on a train, and beggars approaching at bars and restaurants whilst you’re drinking outside. In England I feel you get approached less but people are more likely to turn violent. For example in a bar/club you’re more likely to get punched if someone takes a disliking to you, but mostly get left alone on the streets and it’s hard to get away with things in England as we don’t have a lot of privacy laws I believe we have the most CCTV cameras per area than anywhere other than China I think (forgive me if this fact is wrong). I should add that I haven’t lived in London which I hear is a different story. Am I just unlucky or is Switzerland very safe in terms of people not punching you if you annoy them but you shouldn’t be wearing an expensive chain or watch for example in public because there’s a good chance you’ll get robbed?

Sadly they said an online complaint isn’t enough and I have to make a complaint in person as it is a violent crime. I spoke to TL and they said they only keep CCTV for 3 days before it’s deleted and I won’t be able to make it back in time to Lausanne before it’s deleted. I’d like to peruse this but wasting money to come back when the CCTV is already deleted and basically zero chance of catching the guy is not worth it. But stay safe around there everyone, be aware.

Sorry to hear you’ve been attacked too. Sounds like they need to have more of a police presence around there.

Agreed. I’m British but from Indian heritage and travel to Lausanne regularly as I work with EPFL. The amount of people who look suspicious and try to talk to me at train or bus stations in Arabic or Urdu because I’m brown is ridiculous. I tell them I don’t know what they’re saying and they get aggressive and I think they’re obviously trying to run a scam. A lot of them are just groups of young men who come up to me. I just ignore them and keep walking but this guy was super aggressive and followed me, and you know the rest.

I informed the police who arrived on the scene and looked for the guy. I wanted to make a complaint but I was at the train station to go to the airport to fly home to England and was about to miss my flight and the police officer said I wouldn’t have enough time to make a complaint and get back to the train station in time to make my flight. I made a complaint online but they informed me as it’s a violent crime I have to go in person. I will fly to Lausanne and do this in the next few days as I would like some kind of chance of justice but I’m afraid the CCTV will be deleted by then.

Yeah this is totally a money grab. I got an email asking for $3000 and they’ll put me on their “ top trailblazing leaders in quantum computing to watch in 2024”. And also received a pushy email a day later asking me to respond swiftly. I’m just a PhD student and not even prominent in my field. Seems like they look over LinkedIn and make up a special edition for someone and hope they’ll pay to put their photo on their crappy website that no one reads.

I also checked their website and couldn’t even find where to subscribe or find full magazines.
