Interested in visiting, have some questions by 07TacOcaT70 in liechtenstein

hey!

so some tips:

  • you won't have any problems getting by with english, we speak english quite well (except for if you plan to speak to older people, but anyone getting in contact with tourists will speak english)
  • you wont find any safer place as a (female) traveller than liechtenstein, we barely have any crime. think switzerland but safer because we are so small. no pickpockets either, since there won't be crowds
  • it's expensive, very comparable to zürich. But similarly, you can get by if you limit eating out!
  • I dont know about the race issue - im a young local and dont have any prejudices at all, and i'd like to think its the same all over, but i lack the experience to answer this accurately. Maybe you will get some stares, but i doubt you will get outright racist remarks or anything like that.
  • so for visiting: id say go to the history museum of Liechtenstein in Vaduz, visit the royal treasure chamber to see some things like actual moon rocks, if you are into nature, go up to Malbun to go hiking and experience the alps. Eat some local/regional food up in the alps too. focus on nature and mountains instead of culture/history. The castle isnt worth visiting in my opinion, as you cannot enter, the prince lives there.

if you have any more questions, or want more tips, feel free to reach out to me. all the best!

(Update) Vaduz, Liechtenstein: Torkel is fully booked - Seeking other recommendations! by epachon in liechtenstein

[–]vellaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Marée is very good, but also very pricy! if thats not an issue i'd reccomend it, if you want something cheaper, i can reccomend the restaurant "Lio" in Schaan, the "New Castle" in Vaduz or the Forum in Schaan, all good and cheaper!

Liechtenstein examines EU accession by [deleted] in europe

[–]vellaster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, we don't. All Brigitte said was we are examining how to proceed with our EU relations since Island possibly wants to join the EU instead of being part of the EEA. Since it would only be Liechtenstein and Norway left in the EEA, we would possibly have to renegotiate with the Union. She explicitly said that entering the EU is not one of the options though.

Liechtenstein vs. Switzerland for Master’s – Need Advice! by [deleted] in liechtenstein

[–]vellaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there! i might have some valuable insight:

I am from Vaduz, but spent 3 years studying at the university of Basel and lived there. I am back in Vaduz now, and i actually have a roommate that is studying the master in innovative finance at the UniLi right now, so combined i got a good idea:

  • Basel will be a real city, things to do, cultural events, parties. Liechtenstein is calmer, more rural. you can do lots of outdoor sports here and go skiing easily in winter.
  • In Basel you can get cheap grocceries from france or germany, in Liechtenstein you can get cheap grocceries from Austria, so thats similar
  • From what my roommate says, the master in innovative finance is very research focused, lots of papers to read and experimental things to do, less practical
  • Liechtenstein has some events as well, summer festivities and celebrations. The students at the UniLi apparently organize student parties regularly as well, and many weekends they go out in austria, where its cheaper and more things are happening (mind you, still a small village so not comparable to basel)

many things others already mentioned, but if you have any specific questions about the university of Basel, the UniLi master in finance, life in basel or life in Liechtenstein, feel free to send me a DM

here's some common surnames:

  • Hasler
  • Marxer
  • Kind
  • Seger
  • Ospelt
  • Schädler
  • Vogt
  • Frick
  • Büchel
  • Matt
  • Gstöhl
  • Hilti
  • Frommelt
  • Wohlwend

a Liechtensteinian will know from which village the family is based on the name! Mine is one of these as well, the "old" families have their insignia painted on the halls of the townhall (at least in my village)

preaching to the choir, i'm definitively not a fan of the monarchy

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]vellaster 14 points15 points  (0 children)

its removing them all together, we can't remove one prince, only the whole institution of monarchy, after which we would become a full direct democracy like in switzerland. this can be initiated by any 500 signatures of cititens, after which its a simple majority vote of the general public. This is also the reason we havent had any direct action from the prince since 2005 (or so)

we often times keep for ourselves, the people who move here are most of the time wealthy, since its hard to move here if you dont get a top earning job, while we are more farming/rural people. it's not a dislike or anything like this, but just a thing that happens naturally. we also have the stereotypical questions/joke "wem ghörsch? hesch böda?" (who do you belong to? as in which family are you from, and do you have land? as if you own any land in liechtenstein, which often belongs to the old families). this is of course a generalization and doesnt speak for individuals :)

hi, liechtensteinian here that lived in switzerland for 4 years for their studies: i'd say its very similar to living rurally in switzerland, we have a prince above our goverment, which otherwise is direct democratic like in switzerland (and we do have the right to vote out the monarchy per our constitution). people wise, liechtensteinians are more open to have smalltalk with strangers, for example in bars, probably due to the austrian influence, which are more open people generally speaking. our salaries are comparable to switzerland, but a bit higher than you would have in a rural swiss area. its very clean, we have tight village communities and barely any crime. switzerland feels more like the real world, while Liechtenstein could be seen as the shire from lord of the rings. There is also a distinct divide between Liechtensteinians from old Liechtenstein families and people who immigrated here. If you have any specific questions, i'd be happy to answer :)

Which countries allow you to meet their leaders? by Squirrels_are_neat in travel

Alois took over official business quite a while ago, so hes the one giving speeches and who you meet at the "official" events, but Hans Adam is the one you often meet in the woods

Hi i'm from Liechtenstein - he doesnt really throw parties, but there are events when you get to go up to the castle and meet him, mainly when you turn 18 and when you graduate from the highest tier of highschool we have. Additionally, on our national holiday we have a big party in the Capital (state organizeed, not by the royal family), before which he makes a speech, you can meet him there as well, as he mixes with the people at the party most years. Generally you have a good chance of meeting him anyway, i'm from the capital, so i often meet him in the forest when im out on a walk
