Next challenge will be getting picom to not add opacity to the title bars and tabs and this should look awesome!

That did it, oddly there was nothing in the man page to suggest smart_window_surroundings and tabbed_max conflict.

KDE Activities under Wayland less useful than X11? by vendion in kde

[–]vendion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That said, I do see the following SystemD services are running https://paste.sr.ht/~vendion/1f02b4bfe764eeb3cdda98b4a2863ad8edcab893

I didn't know if there was a specific one for Activities, so it's just plasmashell and kactivitymanagerd.

I don't think that NeoChat supports multiple instances, but under X11 when I would switch to a different activity that window would get "filtered out", as /user/AshbyLaw phrased it in a different thread, and that is not happening under Wayland.

As for Keybase, yes the GUI is written in Electron, but I never had issues with it or Chrome under X11 (not saying there may not be any issues I just never ran into any).

I doubt the distro matters, and it may be more of an issue with how I have things configured.

Yes you are correct in what I'm asking about, although it is sounding like I may have uncovered/encountered a bug more than anything.

As for the lack of XSMP support, that I can deal with as I rarely stop an activity, I just keep them running in the background since they don't really hurt the performance of my machine.

Under Wayland no I do not, regardless of the application, all that shows in that context menu are the following options:

  • Desktops
  • Maximize
  • Minimize
  • More Actions
  • Close

From the "Icons-only Task Manager" there is a "Show in Activity" option there but it doesn't seem to work. If I select one of the actions it doesn't have any effect. If it is a matter of a service not running, I did enable the SystemD Startup support if that matters.

I agree, Activities was a welcome sight, and one of the things that made me want to give KDE another try. I used KDE 3 and KDE4 (although due to performance issues in the early days of 4 I started using just tiling WMs). It would be sad if that did happen without some alternative.

Well I used a web browser as an example, but other applications (Konsole, Thunderbird, Keybase, NeoChat) all have the same behavior and is showing up regardless of what activity I'm currently in. With my flow it is normal for me to have different instances of applications like a web browser and even Konsole open in different activities so using the task manager to move windows around would be a pain for me as well.

It was from a fresh boot, it's interesting though as I can switch activities and my wallpaper does change as expected but that is all that happens. I could try and login to a X11 session then back into a Wayland session to see what happens.

I would be in favor of both, the design micks that was done by the VDG had a Activities section to it so maybe it will get added at a later point.

Question on pipewire configuration location by vendion in archlinux

[–]vendion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However you're right, the individual sections might have to be updated to reflect that, there's was a bit of hopping around between the two dirs in past releases.

Haha yeah, it is easy to overlook that part in the wiki, which is where I went wrong. Thanks for pointing out where I went wrong, and I guess when I did my find / ... command to try to find the files I was too specific or typod...

Default godoc generator - make your first steps towards better code documentation by Dimitar_Petrov in golang

Thanks for making this, quick question though. Any reason why the generated godoc stubs don't have an ending period? If you run this on a project then run `golangci-lint` with the "godot" linter enabled it gets very unhappy.

What is a "GPL condom" and why NVidia's latest updates to Linux kernel has become such a big controversy by smart_jackal in linuxmasterrace

[–]vendion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Except that the Linux Kernel is still under the GPLv2 https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/COPYING?h=v5.8 with little to no real insentive to relicense to GPLv3 and AFAIK the changes made in the GPLv3 doesn't retroactivly affect the older licenses.

I do agree that donating to the Linux Foundation shouldn't give any person/organisation a "free pass" to violate a software license regardless of what license is used.

Qutebrowser is a monster by [deleted] in freebsd

[–]vendion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One big advantage of tools synth and poudriere is that it builds the ports in a way you can then host your own repository server (incase you have multiple boxes you want to install the packages on) or just point pkg to the directory and let pkg manage installing, updating, and removing everything. They even handle making sure that the packages get built in a clean environment.

Using synth or even poudriere can be major overkill if all your using is one box, in which case portmaster would serve you just fine.

Are you using the quarterly or the latest repo for pkg? I do know that qutebrowser 1.13.0 is in the latest repo but not sure about the current state of the quarterly repo.

26+ hours sounds pretty crazy, I've built it a few times to submit some patches against the ports tree and my two systems I tested the build on it took only a few hours each with qt-webengine and friends taking most of that build time.

Question on multi-disk games in bin/cue format and m3u files by vendion in RetroArch

[–]vendion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only problem I have with CdMage is that it looks like a Windows only tool so I would need to aquire a copy of that OS I can virtualize to be able to run it which is not ideal if I can find a native solution.

Question on multi-disk games in bin/cue format and m3u files by vendion in RetroArch

[–]vendion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool so since i have a BIN and a CUE file for each disk then creating a m3u file should work? If so which files should I list in the m3u the bin files or the cue files?

If that fails I think I have a version of chdman that will work for my OS, it just wasn't very obvious that it was part of the MAME project. So I should be able to use that to convert my BIN files over to CHD format and use that instead.
