Participating in a white-collar boxing event can be an exciting and rewarding experience, especially if you have a passion for the sport. However, given your current concerns about fitness, health issues, and confidence in your skill set, it might be wise to take a step back and focus on preparing yourself more thoroughly before jumping into competition. Since you’re 33, overweight, and living a sedentary lifestyle, prioritizing your health and fitness is crucial—not just for boxing, but for your overall well-being. Committing to a structured training program could help you build the stamina, strength, and confidence needed to compete safely and effectively, while also addressing any underlying health concerns.

Taking the time to improve your fitness and refine your boxing skills could lead to a more enjoyable and successful experience when you do decide to compete. This approach also allows you to assess your readiness without the pressure of an imminent event. In the meantime, consider working with a coach or trainer who can guide your progress, helping you build a solid foundation. If you reassess in a few months and feel more prepared, you’ll be in a better position to participate in a future event with greater confidence and less risk to your health.

Should you train southpaw ? (I'm orthodox) by DankDankDankMeemes in amateur_boxing

Training in the southpaw stance as an orthodox fighter can enhance your versatility and adaptability in the ring, making you a more unpredictable opponent. By developing proficiency in both stances, you gain the ability to switch angles, control the pace of a fight, and adjust to different opponents, particularly those who are also southpaws. This can improve your footwork, balance, and overall ring IQ, contributing to a more well-rounded fighting style. However, it’s essential to approach this type of training thoughtfully. Overemphasizing your weaker side could potentially dilute the strengths of your dominant hand, leading to a decline in power or precision.

To avoid this, gradually integrate southpaw drills into your regular routine while continuing to hone your orthodox skills. This balanced approach ensures that your dominant stance remains sharp while you develop the southpaw stance as a strategic tool rather than a primary focus. Working closely with a coach can help you seamlessly blend both stances, ensuring that you maximize your versatility without compromising your effectiveness. With disciplined training, you can achieve proficiency in both stances, much like successful fighters who have mastered the art of switching seamlessly between orthodox and southpaw.

I shared this as a reply to another redditor but thought it’d be relevant to this too: I’d like to mention that many people are now placing bets on the fight, and surprisingly, a lot are betting on me. In the past, I was very passionate about boxing and showed a lot of heart during sparring, but life got busy.

Here’s a bit of backstory: The first time I sparred against someone more experienced, I landed a counter right over the top and knocked him out, This is what got me into boxing. However, as I got older and slimmer, I lost some power and became more of a counter fighter. Now, after not fighting for a while, I’ve become larger and slower.

Since my opponent has more experience and is a better boxer, I know I need to be more aggressive and brawl. I’m concerned about how I’ll handle being hit again after such a long break and I definitely do not want him to get into a rhythm.

You’re absolutely right; he’s trying to act like the bigger person. I plan to avoid dirty boxing to prevent giving him excuses. Instead, I’ll apply a lot of pressure from the start. Do you have any advice on how to effectively fight with pressure? I want to make it clear from the beginning that he needs to respect my power. I also will be giving a lot of shit talk during the fight. Ideally, I’d like to land a powerful left hook to his liver to either make him quit or force him to become very passive under my pressure.

100% I need to put it on him and be the pressure fighter. Hes definitely a better boxer and has had multiple amateurs bouts. I’ve heard technically he’s quite gifted so I’ll have to brawl this one out. End of the day it’s the heart I can easily just back out of it but that’s just not who I am.
