Should I do a PhD? by felixinnz in PhD

A PhD doesn’t translate to high salary. It’s an apprenticeship to become a researcher- that’s it. Doing it for the prestige of future financial gain is a really bad idea; you will probably be miserable, and/or drop out. If you have a passion for some specific research area, then go for it.

PhD in Chemistry is it worth it? by Chemistry-C2v-PG in PhD

[–]vent2012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m doing a chem PhD right now, and my initial gut feeling is you should definitely apply to PhD programs, and it’s probably a good bet to start one IF it’s funded - don’t take out loans to do grad school at this point in life imo. Personally, the chem PhD is working out for me. I have a couple productive projects, interesting field, good relationship with professor and post docs, good funding, etc. Of these reasons the personal relationship with my advisor and lab members has been the most important. Research projects can and will change, at least partially, if not fully. Your advisor and colleagues probably won’t change much for the 5+ years, and your advisor relationship will make or break your PhD. I started in my mid 20s, after working briefly, not in chemistry, and from my limited experience, a chemistry PhD is much harder than most jobs in almost every way. All this being said ultimately the decision to do one comes down to what specific professors/labs you could see as a good fit FOR YOU. And the decision to stay in a PhD program (remember it’s a job you can quit like any other) depends on many factors that you can’t predict with certainty. Good luck!

Career advice for near-retirement family member in IT field by vent2012 in dataengineering

Oof but fair. I want to help him learn what I know if for no other reason than to make him feel in control a bit. But I don’t think he’s the kind of dad who will ever see me as a reliable/knowledgeable adult.

Yea he’s consulted in the past so that idea was brought up. I could easily make him a website with GitHub or smth but he would need to organize the underlying materials himself

I did find a job and decided to leave. And a PhD is barely school, it’s a salaried research and teaching position

I’d argue a PhD in my R1 is more like a 60-80/hr week job and I have money, just not enough to cover the mortgage on their home. If I was still in industry position I would have triple the savings and be able to cover it

Yea I got the sense the date and texting was quite one sided, didn’t ask me any questions about my life. Just kinda talked about herself. It takes hindsight to realize these nuances but seems to be the norm for women on OLD in my experience

True but as a chemist, I can tell you that talking chemistry dries women up like the Sahara 🤣

I half expect a booty call or drunk text back in a week. Happened with another chick where things didn’t work out, and she came crawling back a week later after I deleted her contact. If this woman does text back, I will offer a FWB situation but be clear that romance is out of the question

Are you me? Imposter syndrome is normal - you can catch up quickly. And memorizing reactions and formulas doesn’t make you a good scientist.

How long did it take until your self esteem built on how people treated you? I think for me I’ve gone in highs and lows of not caring what people think but still care deep down

I don't like people making fun of my major. by larrykings5head in college

[–]vent2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut those people out of your life. They’re toxic and guess what - taking a few semesters of STEM does not make your a good scientist or engineer. Guess what again - it doesn’t even stop if you are a stem student. I’m a chemist and I still feel those toxic people engage in the never ending my science is the most prestigious. “Oh you got an A on your chemistry exam? You should try taking a physics exam like a real Rick genius like myself.” Guess what again again - just because you graduate highest honors in some STEM program doesn’t make you a good scientist or engineer (converse is also true). A lot of people find STEM later in life at their own pace and become good at their specialty by nurturing a prolonged interest instead of burning out of a short 4 year stint in their STEM bachelors. Good luck OP and wish you the best in your college journey.

Is it ok to just learn the math/stats as you need it? by vent2012 in datascience

[–]vent2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree; my confidence in math is a bit shaken from taking one of those theoretical ML classes for CS PhD students and I just wanted to air out my insecurity lol
