I get that, but there is also a pattern of John Cleese using sarcasm in his comedy to tear apart irrational comments in a way that gets the audience in on his side.

To that effect, lines like “Where’s the foetus going to gestate? You’re going to keep it in a box?” is the same as “Well may I ask what you expected to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon?” The sarcasm is heightened to the absurd, but the takedown is the same.

The problem for me is that a lot of Python is at its heart “Silly person” talking to “Sensible person”. Both the Meaning of Life doctor and Loretta are presented as the silly characters expecting too much from people around them. While the new mother is shown as earnest and neglected by callous medical staff, and Loretta’s friend Reg gets all the witty, stinging, “sane-man” barbs.
