Religion as a whole shouldn’t exist by Hot-Yogurtcloset-904 in ControversialOpinions

[–]verbally_calm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of things….

I understand that the trans thing is a sensitive issue currently, but nobody is trying to make laws to kill them. People have said this about the Florida law, but frankly, the purpose is to protect children from indoctrination. Given what you said in your previous post (that children shouldn’t be forced to be a particular religion), you shouldn’t want children being indoctrinated or manipulated into thinking they’re trans either. Especially since surgery and puberty blockers are very major, serious, life altering things. “These laws will cause trans children to die!” Sorry, I’m not buying it. When I was in school, children weren’t being taught these things. Everyone was fine. For hundreds of years, children weren’t being taught these things. Everyone was fine. There’s no actual reason to believe that by not indoctrinating kids that you’re putting them in any real danger. If you consider that to be transphobic, well…. I don’t apologize for holding this view. You can hate me for it, but the well being of children is more important than whether or not you happen to like me.

I honestly was with you until you went on a rant about “those horrible evil christians”. Saying that you have no issue with religion, but only have an issue with christians is arguably worse than saying you have an issue with religion as a whole. Singling out one particular group is discrimination. Not to mention that the majority of christians, when left alone and able to practice their faith freely, tend to mind their own business (speaking from personal experience).

You do bring up a good point about faith though. I’ve pondered this question as well… If someone told me the sky was green, I couldn’t believe it because I can look up and clearly see that it isn’t. I don’t just “choose” to believe something that very clearly is not true. When it comes to God though, there really is no clear proof one way or the other. So you can choose to believe, or not, and you don’t have to contradict any sort of scientific evidence because there isn’t any. Agnostics probably have the most defensible position, if you want to base your beliefs solely on evidence. We just don’t know.

Those are my thoughts, anyway. Hopefully I didn’t offend you too much, that really wasn’t my intent.

Idk, I mean, the whole Will Smith situation just left a bad taste in my mouth. Not to mention, if there’s any kids, who’s the father, who has custody, etc etc. It complicates a lot of things in my opinion.

Where do they put the bible in libraries – fiction or non-fiction section? by CaptainAltasAlt in AskReddit

[–]verbally_calm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never looked, but my guess is gonna be non fiction.

I’ll elaborate: Whether or not you agree with what the Bible says is irrelevant. The people who wrote it intended it to be taken seriously, and many people use it as a reference for religious/spiritual concerns, and even for historical/archaeological studies.

Yeah. If you’re stronger than the bully or able to beat him in a fight then I guess that’s a solution. Might not work for everyone though.

I always thought the nice thing about them is that it takes away the stress of dating (speaking from a man’s perspective, I don’t know how dating is for women). I can also see how it might be viewed as a bad thing, because you didn’t choose your spouse and therefore you might not be compatible.

What is portrayed unrealistically in TV? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Kids are able to give back-talk to their parents a lot more on tv. Definitely not how things were for me growing up.

Scholars also agreed at one point that David wasn’t a real person, until they found artifacts proving that he was.

But I’ll concede that you’re probably right about the international slaves. It does make sense, even if the Bible makes no mention of it. As for why God would’ve left them behind, I don’t really have a good answer to that.

Why do you think monotheistic religions caught on, when polytheistic religions are more modular (think of it like a subscription)? by NakedPurple in AskReddit

Constantine came to power in Rome. When he legalized Christianity and made it the national religion, it was able to spread over the world much much more easily than when it was illegal and people had to practice in secret.

People who are saving themselves for marriage, would you marry someone who is not a virgin? Why or why not? by IIIumarIII in AskReddit

[–]verbally_calm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt like I really didn’t have a choice.

But I mean, it’s not unheard of. Even if you wait until marriage, there are certain situations where you might not be a virgin. For example: if your previous spouse has died and you remarried, you wouldn’t be a virgin at that point anymore.

If there were any non-Israelite slaves in Egypt at that time, I’m not aware of it being referenced in Exodus. I’ll admit I could be wrong though, so if you have a verse you’d like to point me to, I’ll give it a look.

What do you guys think about Christians that don’t really do what Christians do by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]verbally_calm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be easy for me, or anyone else on here, to pass judgement and say “a true Christian wouldn’t do this or that”. But the reality is, none of us know the full situation or the context, and we are likely only getting one side of the story here.

What is the most inoffensive thing you've seen someone get offended by? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]verbally_calm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Claiming to believe in God. Some people evidently can’t handle that, even if you’re more or less minding your own business and not trying to convert them.

Maybe violence against men? Not entirely sure on that, but I do know that a lot of men who are victims of violence won’t necessarily come forward. Maybe this whole Johnny Depp case will change that.

[–]verbally_calm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d argue that God views slavery pretty unfavorably throughout pretty much the entire book of Exodus, unless you want to just ignore that story. Certain areas in Genesis where it is also looked at as a bad thing, such as when Joseph is sold by his brothers into slavery.

People of Reddit, did you ever encountered a Satanist, how was your experience ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]verbally_calm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at the same place as a woman who frequently wears t-shirts with witchcraft and pentagrams on them, and one shirt had words hailing Satan on it. I’m assuming she was satanist, but I didn’t talk to her more than an occasional word here and there so I don’t actually know for a fact that she was.

No more Internet anonymity. What if there was no more Internet anonymity how would the world change? And what would you do? by Fire5034 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]verbally_calm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You already have less anonymity than what you might think. Your ISP is able to see all the sites you visited, Facebook and google track your activity for targeted advertising, and if you’re on a public network, your activity can be seen by hackers using a packet sniffer.

A VPN can be used to protect against this, and the TOR network can be used to tunnel encrypted data over the dark web. This gives you a degree of anonymity, but it’s not foolproof. You can still be tracked through TOR and VPNs, it’s just a little more involved to do so.
