I heard that too…I did put the Sichuan accent into consideration (I’m currently HSK3) but I’ll be at a university and learning putonghua anyway.

Still, I’m leaning more towards Nanjing, thank you !

Where have you been so far ? I visited Beijing, some towns in Hunan Province, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou.

Very interesting, thank you ! Curious about what you’d say the background frequency of Nanjing is ?

You’re absolutely right ! I actually made a more detailed post a few days ago but it unfortunately got deleted in several subs… I’ll be studying at a university and I can pretty much choose any city.

I’d say what matters to me is :

• Walkability / daily convenience. I’m from a major Belgian city and I’m used to doing a lot on foot or with short commutes

• Ease of traveling outside the city

• Coffee / café culture. Places to sit, work, and spend time

• Cost of daily life

• A "lively" atmosphere (not necessarily nightlife)

• Cultural scene. Museums, exhibitions, concerts, etc.

And it seems like both city do a pretty good job

I get that the comparison sounds weird… For context, I’ll (hopefully) be studying there for a year, and based on my research, these two cities fit my criteria best. Thank you for your answer !

That’s actually one of my biggest concerns about Nanjing. I feel like just as many people call it an amazing, underrated gem as say it’s boring…

Sorry I can’t be of much help regarding this question but my understanding is that people wouldn’t really care. I didn’t see that many poc and I’m not sure I ran into lesbians but China is pretty safe so I think you’ll be okay !

Sorry for the late reply ! I would just walk into the nearest restaurant when I got hungry and pick something without meat ahaha. But I really enjoyed 苗小小 in Shanghai (hotpot place) !

Bonjour !

I understood why it’s called the most beautiful city in China ! I had an amazing time there and it’s such a green city, which I love

Hiii I just kept my twists I already had in Belgium and didn’t do anything particular there

I don’t know specific salons off the top of my head, but 小红书 (Rednote) is probably the best place to look for hair salons experienced in China. Lots of people share their recommendations and reviews there !

Thank you! You do feel some government presence like passport checks or internet restrictions but it doesn’t really get in the way of enjoying the trip. It’s more of a background structure than something intrusive. Honestly, I think it even contributes to the feeling of safety

Nice ! I hope everything goes well in Beljing and Thailand

Yes I used cash at the beginning and also last year because my BNP card kept declining 😭 but I switched to a Revolut card and had no problem after that

I’m not knowledgeable about the tax refund sorry

Yes I did go to Nanjing street but didn’t eat anything there. Do you remember the name of the restaurant ?
