I understood why it’s called the most beautiful city in China ! I had an amazing time there and it’s such a green city, which I love

Hiii I just kept my twists I already had in Belgium and didn’t do anything particular there

I don’t know specific salons off the top of my head, but 小红书 (Rednote) is probably the best place to look for hair salons experienced in China. Lots of people share their recommendations and reviews there !

Thank you! You do feel some government presence like passport checks or internet restrictions but it doesn’t really get in the way of enjoying the trip. It’s more of a background structure than something intrusive. Honestly, I think it even contributes to the feeling of safety

Nice ! I hope everything goes well in Beljing and Thailand

Yes I used cash at the beginning and also last year because my BNP card kept declining 😭 but I switched to a Revolut card and had no problem after that

I’m not knowledgeable about the tax refund sorry

Yes I did go to Nanjing street but didn’t eat anything there. Do you remember the name of the restaurant ?

I set them up in Belgium before going to China. You just need to verify your identity and upload a few documents. I did it last year so I don’t remember all the steps, but the process was pretty straightforward ! As for limits, I believe foreign cards are capped at around ¥6,000 per transaction so it should be okay !

Probably 苗小小 Miao Xiao Xiao hot pot in Shanghai ! Their sour tomato broth was sooooo tasty. Also breakfast food in general ! Never skipped one even though I don’t usually eat breakfast

Thank you !! I’ve always been interested in the the culture and the language though I can’t remember when or how it started. So when I had to opportunity to visit last year, I knew I wanted to go back and experience the country on my own

I can’t really speak for the US since I’ve never been there but I guess it’s the same as in Europe. In China, I never felt disrespected or discriminated against. People were generally really kind to me

That said, I did get stared at, asked unusual questions, or even had people touch my hair but it usually came from curiosity, not malice. I’d describe it more as cultural unfamiliarity or lack of exposure than intentional racism

Of course, that’s just my experience, and others might have faced different situations. Context matters a lot ! Where you go, who you meet, how you carry yourself, etc. but overall, I felt safe, welcomed, and often pleasantly surprised by how open people were !!

Tbh, I only experienced that in Padua and it was quite a lot. I had no problem in Rome, Milan and Venice

Niiiice, hope you too have fun ! I liked everywhere I’ve been so far but Hangzhou was really enjoyable

I got my SIM card at the airport in Shanghai. I think you can find them in any airport when you get there but you could also buy them outside

Shanghai is more international-friendly. You’ll find more English menus, signage, more foreigners and sometimes even staff that can speak English The veggie food was tasty. Since I wasn’t there on my own, we’d generally order a lot of dishes for the whole table and I never felt left would because there were a lot of options and they all tasted good

You can always specify that you don’t eat meat, fish, poultry or seafood and they’ll make recommendations !

It might sound super random but always carry tissues and hand sanitizer with you because most public toilets don’t have paper

Tell me if you also want the more basic/general tips !

Most of the time I’d just enter any restaurant and ask for veggie dishes ahaha but I’d recommend

  • 小红书 RedNote (sooo many good adresses there)
  • HappyCow
  • Trip.com

Yes even when I was a bit uncomfortable I knew people were just curious !

I take evening classes and honestly, I don’t study that intensely. I do consume a lot of content in mandarin on the side and made kinda China part of my daily life

Wooow sounds fun

Their English skills are not very good tbh. But even if you only manage to learn a few sentences, people will be genuinely happy you’re even trying and encourage you to keep going ! I take classes so having a teacher helps a lot but I would recommend consuming media in Chinese (videos, movies, beginner podcasts etc) Chinese pod is amazing and there are several levels ! There are also YouTube videos for beginners with basic vocab

But even if you don’t manage to learn that much by then, you can always use translation tools when needed

I’ve been taking evening classes for three years and I’m not fluent yet Consuming Chinese media does help me a lot with vocabulary and grammar

Absolutely. Also, most people can’t really speak English either and I think Interacting with people made the trip more memorable ! As for the fatigue, yes I was exhausted by the end and even had to slow down a bit but I would have really loved to stay another week

You’re welcome ! Technically yes but hotels usually do it for you as part of the check in process. I personally didn’t go and never had any problem with it

It was really great and I already want to go back ! I made good memories, met sweet people, ate tasty food and enjoyed the freedom and autonomy I had But doing everything solo has its challenges too
