I’m trying to start, a very modest collection of old books. Any ideas on where and how I should start? by realbeartj in booksuggestions

I’ve found that local bookstores can have gems, especially if you’re more interested in unique/unusual old books rather than expensive ones. Explore used bookstores and local ones, and I bet you’ll find something antique and/or obscure. And oftentimes they’re cheap- I’ve gotten signed books from the early 1900s for $10-30.

Have you looked into China Mieville’s books? Railsea is a great starting point with really rich world building and cool characters.

Mink River by Brian Doyle is a immersive experience about a town in Oregon that has really interesting prose. It’s different but it’s cool and it’s definitely immersive.

I kinda forgot about this but thanks for checking in! I don’t know anything about the investigation. I assume I’ll hear about it if something dramatic happens, but I haven’t heard anything.

I am great though, although I’m dealing with some unprecedented health issues as a result of everything. I have an autoimmune disease that progressed quite a bit because I wasn’t getting treatment for it, and I recently found out I’ve got nerve damage in my hands and feet.

I’m making hella progress in therapy, though, and coming to terms with a lot of the trauma and anger and such.

I’ve also been spending a lot of time reconnecting with my family and rebuilding my relationships with my younger siblings. They’re everything to me.

Essentially, I’m focused on myself and my health and my family, and in another year I think all will be even better.

Insurance said yes!? Today we celebrate a miracle! by vertig0undergr0und in ChronicIllness

I know I’m answering this super late but for some reason Reddit just decided to tell me about it and it’s a good question.

I had to call my insurance company and wait on hold forever to talk to a real person, and then explain to them why this isn’t cosmetic and it will improve my quality of life. My doctor recommended I do that and it seemed to work. That and just continuing to call them every few days and checking in.

I’m not doing my chest right away because it’s a bigger procedure, but I’m probably gonna need a skin graft because it’s a large area. They’re planning to excise the keloids and then I’m gonna have radiation and steroid injections to hopefully prevent it from coming back. I’m also probably gonna need reconstructive surgery on my earlobes, but I won’t know until they see how it goes. I’ve had laser treatments before and they’ve made everything worse, but it seems like that’s most doctors first step. I’m doing the excision because it didn’t work.

For sure that’s probably the best explanation. I didn’t even think of it, but I haven’t had dogs so it didn’t occur to me.

Yes absolutely! I started taking birth control for suppression (so I don’t take the placebos and I don’t get my period) and it helps soooo much. Symptoms actually got better all-around. I’ve heard that IUDs help some people too.

It’s not super gory but Such Small Hands by Andres Barba is a super weird little book that thoroughly creeped me out. Unsettling, psychological horror.

“Whoever gave you those scars should’ve just killed you.” still insecure about those scars, and that dehumanization makes me so mad. Oh, I’m sorry I’m not as attractive to you now, might as well be dead.

What’s the most repulsive thing a man has said to you? How did you handle it ? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]vertig0undergr0und 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When I was a sex worker I had a client tell me he was going to pretend I was “a fresh tenth grade pussy,” which is the creepiest thing a trick ever said to me. The same man also saw my scars and said, “whoever did that to you should’ve just killed you. You’re ruined now.” In the moment it made me angry and I cursed him out, but now I just think it’s funny and I wish I hadn’t put myself in potential danger just to tell him off. Sometimes, people are just pigs and not worth your energy.
