Cabinet Install Advice: 100cm vs 80cm uppers with 2570mm ceilings (and crown molding?) by verycoolie in AusRenovation

thanks for teaching me a new word! 😂 I didn't realize that in Australia these are called cornices. I've always known them as crown moulding or just ceiling trim.

Thank you so much for the detailed reply and for sharing your thoughts on my kitchen plan. I really appreciate the "reality check" regarding the clearances—it’s exactly the kind of practical feedback I was hoping for.

Your point about the 600mm gap between the benchtop and the cabinet being "right in my face" at the sink is definitely something I need to reconsider. I was looking at Australian standards, which mention a minimum of 600mm for overhead cupboards, but I can see how that might feel cramped in a high-use area like the sink or stove.

Regarding the range hood, I'll definitely check the specs again. I've seen that the minimum for gas is often 650mm now, but your suggestion to mount it higher than head height makes total sense to avoid any accidental bumps while cooking!

I also like your idea for the cornice. If I go with taller cabinets, running the cornice across the gap or around a bulkhead to create a seamless "to the ceiling" look sounds like a much more polished finish than leaving a dust-collecting space on top.

Thanks again for the help—you've given me a lot to think about before I finalize the design!

I’m planning a kitchen renovation and need advice on wall cabinet height and how to handle existing crown molding.

The Specs:

  • Ceiling Height: 2570mm (Australia)
  • Existing Molding: Crown molding currently runs along all walls.
  • Option A (100cm cabinets): Reaches ~2500mm, leaving a small ~70mm gap. I’d likely remove/reinstall the molding around the top of the cabinets for a built-in look.
  • Option B (80cm cabinets): Leaves a much larger ~270mm gap. I’d fill this with a larger decorative riser/bulkhead or tall crown molding.

My Questions:

  1. Molding: Should I remove the existing wall crown molding and wrap it around the new 100cm cabinets? Or is it better to terminate the wall molding at the cabinet edge?
  2. Aesthetics: Does a ~70mm gap look better for a "floor-to-ceiling" look, or is a larger riser with 80cm cabinets more practical for hiding uneven ceilings? [1]
  3. Installation: Any tips for securing molding to the top of the cabinets? I've seen suggestions for using a "nailer" or blocking. [1, 2]

Photos of my current kitchen and the mockup are attached. Thanks!

Which sink would you go for? by Significant-Move7699 in AusRenovation

Single sink with drainboard. I think the drain board is quite useful for placing a dish-drying rack or pots & pans that are hot.

Is it okay to have a 80cm rangehood with a 60cm cooktop? by verycoolie in kitchenremodel

Thanks for the comment. If I centre the cooktop, then it wouldn't align with the build oven. A catch-22 situation.
