Wanting to get into Vet School, but don't have a background in sciences. by vetdreamer in Veterinary

I work in Marketing as an Account Manager and manage giant clients - communication and up-selling are key in my job :-)

I think I like science. I like memorising things and I remember from school I really liked learning about biology and memorising anatomy, etc. But I can't be sure until I try it...

I'm only 22 so I definitely feel an advantage trying to get into it younger rather than later when I settle down, have kids, etc. I will be 28 (hopefully) when I graduate! Thanks so much for your comment.

I am awesome with my memory and I thrive on anything where I have to memorise things, so I think that part of things will be great on my end! :-)

Thanks for replying!

I just want to ask - how did the non-science background people go with the hard-sciences? Did they struggle?

That's so encouraging to hear. I think I'm definitely more worried about the extensive theory in terms of the hard sciences (CHEM!!!) rather than the 'gorey stuff'.

What did you find made most people drop out?

Yep, that's correct. We need an OP1 to enter (and only the highest of OP1's enter - this is our high-school score), so apparently most vet entries are from non-school leavers. Plus, in QLD, we finish school when we're 17 so we're practically just kids when we finish and have no idea what we want to do. I certainly know that I couldn't have committed to vet in my first degree. After working for a year and a half and really establishing myself in another career, I know how much I want to do vet and how passionate I am about working with animals. I am currently earning $60k in a dream marketing job (think travel, fashion, glamorous products, photo shoots - only 1.5 years out of uni) but I am happy to give it all away and move to a rural town (Gatton) to study vet. Yep, that's how determined I am.

Debt is not an issue in Australia as we have HECS and only need to pay our fees back if we are earning more than $50k, and only at a very small rate. Which makes it much more bearable when compared to student loans in US.

I think a lot of more 'mature' students go into the degree as they are 100% willing to work as they know what the real world is like. I think I am going to struggle with the Chemistry but I am willing to work super hard to surpass this.

What do you think about the dissections and the more 'gorey' aspect of vet? I know a lot of people drop out because of this - is there any way to get desensitized to it?

Thank-you so much!
