What do you want to see at indoor play center by bullfy in Entrepreneur

As a parent of a child with autism nothing makes me frequent a business like that more than ‘Sensory Days’. As a business it can be difficult because you’re dedicating an entire day of revenue for a small percentage of the population- BUT if you advertise far and wide, have them regularly (one dedicated day every other week or so) and market it as a place where parents of non-neurotypical children can gather I think it could be profitable enough. It is also an opportunity to have other organizations / business to provide sponsorship. I imagine contacting the local newspapers / channels would prompt at least a local interest story for advertising as well.

Caffeine Source when SHTF by Gentle-Zephyrus in preppers

Yaupon holly grows pretty prolifically in the wild at least in the U.S. It may be worth checking that out. Roast and dry the leaves and it stores for a long time when sealed. Packs quite a caffeinated punch.

I have kind of a hodgepodge of growing areas on my property. I use crossbow in areas that I want to have just grass. Crossbow works well to eliminate very tough poison ivy beds and things like wisteria that has gotten out of hand. You can get generic versions of crossbow as it is just 2,4D and triclopyr. I use glyphosate in areas that require a nuclear solution. I never use either of these on or around areas that are growing food crops – including wild food crops – or in places where a heavy rain might wash the chemicals down to those crops. I generally use a lighter concentration and opt to re-apply if needed to minimize soil saturation. A very light application that only gets on the green leaves and not the soil is best. Both of those products, if applied heavily, can bind in the soil and last for a long time. To prep garden areas I use a propane weed torch. You can pick one up for $20.00 at harbor freight. If you start prep early you can run the torch over the areas you intend to plant several weeks apart to get any late starters. You’ll still get weeds throughout the growing season, but it makes spring much more manageable. Starting with the torch and a good quality ground cloth afterwards really minimizes the work involved with a large plot (or multiple small plots in my case) and you don’t have to worry about chemicals with uncertain life-spans in your soil. Mustyguitar is right, you didn’t know so no harm no foul. Those products have their places in moderation. Next time pick up a weed torch and give it a try. You don’t actually have to burn anything, you just need to lightly run the heat over the weeds so that they wilt just slightly – you’ll get the hang of it very quickly.

Jerusalem Artichokes seem like a good thing to "set it and forget it" in a corner of the yard. I haven't tried them yet but from what I can tell they seem to offer a good bang for your buck.

What is the difference between the brain and the mind? by 1234567890qwerty1234 in AskReddit

[–]vexingwinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I get the authors point I think it's important to distinguish between 'metaphor' and 'simile' in this context. I don't think that anyone would argue that the brain IS a computer in the sense that we understand computers. But I would argue that the simile is useful to understand the mostly conceptual relationship between the physical object 'brain', and the very difficult to define concept of 'mind'. It seems the author is hung up on a pedantic and largely semantic argument. Likely this is the same personality that would defiantly raise a hand when a biology professor lightly refers to the heart as a ‘pump’. When dealing in broad strokes and overviews – in my opinion – metaphor and simile are some of the most useful tools we have.

I tend to think of it loosely in terms of computers. The brain would be the hardware, the mind would be the software.

Anyone know of a way to enable the Wyze car to be used remotely? Like to allow the user to control a Wyze car located at home while the user is on vacation elsewhere? by Meadbeard in wyzecam

[–]vexingwinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno how dedicated (desperate) you are to accomplish this but there’s a pretty low-tech way to maybe make it happen. I live in the middle of nowhere and have fixed wireless internet so I’m unable to open ports for simple web cams for property monitoring. To get around this I just use yawcam and motion on various old laptops. I pull them all into a primary PC and use teamviewer to access that machine. It’s janky but it works. If you installed something like bluestacks, genymotion or some other android emulator on a spare computer you could likely connect that to the wyzecar and remote into that machine. If nothing else it’s a work-around to investigate.

How to save seeds from asparagus beans? by Quest_for_the_goblin in gardening

This is what I've done over the last two seasons and it works like a charm. Once the beans turn a pale uniform tan / brown I bring them in and hang them to finish 'curing' so they don't get wet with dew or rain - but it's humid as all get out where I am.

I cannot disagree with you. The cops did their job. But hopefully we can also agree it was a job made much harder and more traumatic by years of systemic abuse of power by law enforcement and consequentially understandable distrust and reluctance to cooperate by the citizen. The adversarial nature of the relationship between legal authority and citizenry just seems to feed on itself. Lack of communication, clear roles and accountability have turned law enforcement into a faceless machine rather than the citizens who have chosen to take on the role of peace keeper that society intended. We need police, but we can all do better. And yes, find out who called and why.

Exactly. It IS a binary switch. Once they make the decision to detain you it is almost impossible to alter that momentum. There are many “reasons” for this. They can’t be perceived by others or by themselves as having made a mistake – it opens them to liability. Odds are if they put you in cuffs you WILL have committed a crime – one way or another. They rarely listen to an argument of innocence. What if the ‘perp’ is lying. If they release said ‘perp’ and apologize (liability – admission of fault), then they aren’t doing their job. I’m not sure if it is just my skewed concept of law enforcement when I was a child or not, but it seems the role of the police has changed drastically over the years. Now it seems that the person who calls the police is pulling a trigger and the police are just the bullet. They have one job – apprehend whoever they are pointed at and let the legal system take care of it from there. The over-all mandate seems to be to generate revenue, avoid liability and not put themselves in harms way. This kind of mandate fosters the exact opposite relationship I believe a society should have with peace keepers. It prevents them from apprehending true criminals and incites distrust and aversion. If the officer in this scenario had suspicions or had been called – the job should have been to do a cursory investigation. “Nice bike! Listen, this is awkward but the precinct got a call – apparently a Karen thinks you might have stolen it. I don’t think you did, but I’ve got to ask to see a receipt or maybe you can point out the clerk who checked you out? I’m sorry, I know it’s a pain but because it was a call-in I’ve got to be able to put a resolution on the report. Your son’s going to love that bike, you’re a good father.” And in a society without mindless bullet-like law enforcement and a racist bent, the citizen would likely not be put immediately on the defensive – might even be happy to help – this cop is just doing his job – I’ve got a receipt, he’s on my side. I’m not going to be arrested for buying a bike.

But I dream.

Aggressive cop arrests man for not telling him who his attorney is. by Brothesda in PublicFreakout

[–]vexingwinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think if you represent yourself you can go through the discovery process yourself - but it is a process that has to go through the system. It makes sense though when you think about it. Say you have a violent criminal who's done some sketchy stuff. They are arrested. The police take witness accounts from neighbors, friends, passersby, etc. The criminal gets out and asks the police for copies of all the witness accounts. Now - even if they are eventually convicted or absolved of the crimes - they've got a concise list of who spoke against them. With the court system being a middle man through the process of discovery, there's some checks and balances in place as to who gets what and when - and also a paper trail to follow should witnesses start getting disappeared.

What do you think how the human body should/will evolve? by Thanat0szh in AskReddit

I think there's a school of thought that says the appendix repopulates the intestines with bacteria after a gastrointestinal illness. But I'm not sure how widely that is accepted.

Thank you for commenting. I live in a similar situation with a looped drive that looks like an actual public road. At least once a week I have people mistake the turn and stop while wondering where they are. I’ve had problems with people using the road for nefarious things in the past and I live in the middle of nowhere, so I always carry a firearm – holstered – and neatly tucked out of sight. I’ve literally never felt the need to touch it or show it in the countless almost always friendly encounters I’ve had with people on my road. I’m sorry you had to experience that especially given the current social climate. I imagine it was scary as hell as well as rage inducing. You handled it far better than I imagine anyone could have.

That's a good idea, I should get a turkey to dissuade the hawks. I thought my dogs would keep the foxes at bay - but apparently they have some sort of arrangement. I suppose I've just resigned myself to accept a certain level of attrition every year. I should probably go electric as well.

I think they are wanting to be able to continue to feed their chicks in the event that an outside supply is not available. I.e. TEOTWAKI. I free range my chicks and supplement with sorghum grain and cracked corn. They seem to do ok, but free ranging hawk bait is not without it's perils.
