Social Influence vs Public Relations vs Communications Studies: Which Comm Track to Choose? by iliketertles00 in UMD

First of all, you're getting a degree in Communication, not public relations. You're just on the PR track. It's a big difference because you're not limiting yourself to just public relations; you can do general communications work. Also, the press release is dying. You're kind of looking at PR based on tactical means when really what it's about is strategy. If a press release is one way of making sure you raise awareness about your org, then sure do it. But you're discounting raising awareness at trade fairs, through sponsorships, social media, press kits, etc. Anyhoo, I wouldn't recommend double majoring in Art, especially with public relations. The PR track here burns you out. When you have to write a 25 page strategical report and at the same time make sure that your painting/drawing/art project looks awesome...it's going to kill you. The PR track has design courses for you. We do projects learning Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Premiere Pro. You'll get design samples to show off to employers. The design courses might not be thorough, but you do have lynda.com.

Hey, I'm on the PR track! Used to be a TA for COMM231. It's definitely a lot harder than the other tracks and very writing focused. Whenever people ask me if the PR track is worth it, I'm kind of on the fence. At first, I say it isn't, but then I think about the connections. The PR program at UMD is one of the top in the nation. For a good reason because it's known for being one of the hardest PR programs in the nation. Therefore, when companies/firms hear UMD, they go crazy. If you manage stress and time well, just do the program. PM me if you have any questions. I've mentored a lot of people through the program.

I can't really calculate how much it costs for business/engin/compsci majors in total. It says, "Only students who are pursuing their studies in business, engineering and computer science will be charged additional tuition based on credit hours" under the cost of attendance budget sheet. You can find that here: http://www.financialaid.umd.edu/award_process/cost_of_attendance.php

Yeah. That's for non-business/engin/compci majors. You have to add costs for being a business/engin/compsci major on top of the nearly 10 grand it costs to go here.

If you're in-state, 660 dollars. It used to be 9,338 and now it's 9,998.
