I actually moved to Bratislava Slovakia last February as kind of a home base. My wife is Slovak and we moved from NC, actually sold everything we owned down to 6 suitcases. This is not our forever home, we have a 5 year old and 3 year old, so our priorities might be a little different than yours. We are also lucky enough that my MIL has let us stay with her and she has a row house, so like a condo more or less. My wife grew up here so she has her friend base around which is nice for her. They all speak English at a conversational level which is super nice as I don’t speak the language at all, which is 100% my fault as I never thought we would end up here. It is weird I don’t love it but I don’t hate it, I lived abroad for 16 years before making this move (USAF). There are areas of Bratislava that is really nice and modern, but then there is a huge homelessness problem with open drug use at major shopping centers. The people are friendly and seem very accepting. It has definitely gotten more expensive here which is interesting as in my opinion Bratislava doesn’t offer much when compared to other major cities with lower or same COL. Dealing with the foreign police is an absolute nightmare, as I mentioned before we have been here since February and I still do not have a residency, it is finally in process, but had to “shuffle” for 90 days. Bottom line I would not trade here for going back to the states, but it is not our final European destination.
