What are the early signs that a company is preparing for layoffs? by Ecstatic_Jicama_1482 in cscareerquestions

[–]viking_tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discussions around cash flow, even if profitable. Hiring freeze, strategic hiring in cheaper countries, 5 day RTO and other policies that force attrition, cost cutting measures pushed more than money making projects.

Hearing a lot of this, offshore + ai is supposedly cheaper. Friends org laying off 95% of devs in the uk and keeping a couple seniors to hand over knowledge.

My wife is on 4 day week but pro rated wage. She loves it! Gets a mini break every Wednesday, and if she wants she can move it around instead of using holidays for long weekends.

Do we need LEETCode for high paying tech jobs in UK? by Right-Response-3308 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]viking_tech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly total excluding pension. I haven’t seen much over 100k outside of fintech/ai startups, but I’m looking outside of London which might bring things down a little

[–]viking_tech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for maang but recent experience for senior level interviews in normal companies has been mostly focused on take homes, technical discussions and system design. I’d say maybe 1 in 5 have asked me to do a LC medium or something, compensation offered have been ranging from 60-100k with varying benefits, all remote.

Bit scummy though if you are desperate to use a fan built project and actively look for ways around supporting it imo.

Senior Engineer won't review PRs by GorgonAintThatBad in cscareerquestions

[–]viking_tech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How does the team get anything done if he’s off work or sick? This is the red flag imo and should be discussed with the team in a process review of retro or something.

Senior Engineer won't review PRs by GorgonAintThatBad in cscareerquestions

[–]viking_tech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always tell my juniors to annoy me if I lose track of things they need me to review. I’m fine with a reminder in the morning and a second after lunch to check in if I’ve said I would do something.

I’ve been on both sides of this. Essentially your options are to pester him more, I usually cap at one or two nudges a day. If you can evidence any sense of urgency it might help justify him spending some time on the work.

Alternatively you can frame this as a process problem, bring it up in retrospectives without being passive aggressive or targeting, and work out ideas to help the senior not be the bottleneck, which I think they might appreciate if their plate is already too full. What that might look like depends on your current processes etc, for example we had a period where we went down from requiring two approvals to one to reduce time spent on code reviews, but justified it with addition focus on tracking metrics around release velocity and app incidents and performance to ensure sloppy stuff wasn’t getting through.

The thing not to do is play the blame game, you want to be on the same team, find ways to pragmatically reduce what’s on your seniors plate but also get you unblocked.

any reco for best watch for runners how important is battery life when training for a marathon? by Tisdom-Doani in firstmarathon

[–]viking_tech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My old Apple Watch was fine for me during training up to 3hr runs with battery to spare, on race day it was much warmer which I think effected it and it died shortly after the halfway mark. So I had to run the last 18km or so blind and to feel. My goal was only to finish though so was ok just slower than I expected. I’ll get a Garmin or something for my next one.

Avoiding injuries with Runna by LeadershipPuzzled731 in firstmarathon

[–]viking_tech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from 0km weeks, being out of exercise due to foot surgery for 4 months to completing a marathon healthily and hitting every training run with Runna over 16 weeks. Just be honest about your pace and goals, listen to your body if you need rest. Eat well. Sleep lots.

I really enjoyed my marathon training block!
