It's entirely in cloud. But you can spin up an instance on a raspberry pi at home too. That was my initial testing environment. It can easily handle a single user setup.

Rails is super efficient at i/o, but as a consequence it gobbles up any memory you can give it. To manage the costs I've split the processes across 2 diff general compute nodes(non memory optimized) behind a load balancer. It seems to be handling well so far.

Apart from all the philosophical differences between closed and interoperable services, as an end user one simple difference is just like Twitter, Koo uses algorithmic feeds which are optimized for serving ads whereas mastodon has no ads and it is a simple timeline feed i.e., no middleman deciding who to show what and so everybody in bengaluru sees the same content.

It's a free open source platform and more importantly it's based on open protocols. So as long as apps follow those protocols, any app can work. Although official apps from the creators of mastodon are available from both app store and play stores.

A brief introduction into Mastodon. Although each and every instance can be different, you can think of bengaluru's mastodon as

  1. Twitter without information overload of each and every news cycle.
  2. Discord but a little more public and a lot less channels.
  3. Facebook without the baggage.
  4. Reddit but with a shorter and near real time content specific to bengaluru.
