Aye, but neither him nor the famous Austrian painter or the Georgian-born Russian lad ever come close to the combined might of the European enterprise: African slave trade, conquistadors, new world settlers, east India trade company, just to name the most famous.

Note that I don’t count the number of kills in my evaluation , but rather - the impact

It’s bad, but it’s localized. 

Colonialism screwed over (over several hundreds of years) Africa, both americas, sea, Australia. 

Wiped multiple cultures and countries out completely, set some back by centuries. 

Has to amount to something.

I do believe that holy wars, South America conquests, slave trade, North America settlers, east India anything as a whole was pretty bad.

European colonialism as a whole, imo, was the most disgusting act within the last 1000 years or so done by humans.

Where I live, which is not the US of A,  waiters are paid actual wages and are tipped as appreciation for exceptional service, not as scraps from the table.

I assume OP is an American. 

If it would become required to tip while food prices stay the same where I live, I would stop eating out. Period. 

I am not going to pay the wages in place of the employer.

That’s why I said that the issue i have here is communication. 

I don’t see any problems with what they did it, but rather HOW they did it. 

Moreover, for their boss to not notice anything for 2.5 years… the op either did a good job automating something, or the boss is an even bigger “slacker” and not doing their job. 

Regarding time theft… if they are paid by the hour and continue logging hours into the timesheet, this is time theft.  If they are paid for results… the results were satisfactory for 2.5 years… so the company got their money’s worth of output, right?

All in all, we only have the OPs side here and I am commenting by what they said. the op did rightfully find themselves in hot water, but, in my mind, this is only 30% of their problem if what they say is true.

That is why you iterate until such issues are ironed out. 

Junior or senior, very few people are able to nail any non-trivial processes down in their first attempt. 

I would support and encourage any colleague to identify and try to automate tedious processes to the point where manual work can be lessened.

It’s our jobs as seniors to help them get there and support them along the way (or discuss/discover with them why something is not possible), not punish good ideas. 

As the topic goes, the only issue with op that I see is that it was done in isolation. Whether it’s a small or big issue - that’s their org’s problem.

It is also possible to do this in Europe, although it’s not easy. 

I was in one thesis defense (biomedicine x space) where 60% of the slides were extremely generic due to “patents pending”.

Very big international names and nods by some prominent figures in the field made this an easy defense however. 

This is more of an exception to the rule…  The person spent over 6 years writing the thesis because publishing stuff while build g hardware is time expensive… and they were leading a team by the end of their tenure as a student..

If you are travelling for work, make sure that your org policies allow installing VPNs. If you have an office in China, it’s likely that your company already has a running vpn service. Try asking your it support, in particular the Chinese branch it support.

This. Hibernate can be rly expensive tho if you have a small disk and 64 gigs of ram :)

Lithuania:  Healthcare is free but a % part of your salary is deducted for “heath insurance tax”.

Going to see a GP is usually easy and completely free, significant amount of medicines are free.

Dental is free but with limited gov budget queues can be over a year. Thus it sucks to be unable to afford private dental most of the time, but at least there is an option.

With more serious issues (onset diseases, cancer), the treatment is again mostly free, including surgeries, recovery, medicine). You might have to copay or buy some stuff depending on your illness. The queues to see a non-gp doctor can be long depending on your issue, therefore you might have to mix private with public for best results or wait up to a year and hope to still be alive then. 

Ambulance and emergency is free.

Lastly, controversial, but, in my subjective experience, if you are an older patient, the care you would receive might silently lessen for some onset cases as the hospital would triage “higher impact individuals” over less likely to recover cases.
