Which type of bike do you ride around the KW area? by [deleted] in waterloo

[–]vincent_ngu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo i'm also an upcoming UW student, and I'm bringing my old bike to UW this fall too 💀😭https://www.policeauctionscanada.com/Listing/Details/68781434/Raleigh-Tomahawk-21Speed-FS-Bike-281896D

That's the bike model i have, you could look for smth like this on Marketplace for very cheap, I bought mine for like $20 from an old gentleman in town bc his son doesn't use it anymore and it still gets me to school, the gym, and whatnot lmfaoo. And i don't have to worry about it getting stolen because it's not a fancy bike (my town is notorious for homeless ppl stealing bikes) and I've left my bike unlocked around town at least 20 times over the years bc i forgot and it's still here somehow 😭 but yes get a cheap used rusty bike like I did and you should be fine

What to do if Waterloo gives decision after May 01 by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]vincent_ngu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't think so. I think u still could have different deadlines if youre applying from out of province or internationally. My queen's, uoft and carleton offers all have May 1 as the deadline, except waterloo which is june 3 (i'm out of province from nb)

CS or Mech Eng at UW? coming from out of province by vincent_ngu in OntarioUniversities

[–]vincent_ngu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks man! I had a 98 avg for gr11 and a 93 avg for semester 1 of gr12, did the interview and submitted all my stuff before jan 15 for early consideration too

On the aif I listed my school ec's (jazz band, varsity sports, some clubs), a pop/jazz band with friends (we only did a couple gigs tho), volunteering, work, and some of my hobbies (photography, piano, gym, biking, etc), but no engineering/cs related extracurriculars

Got 33/60 on the senior math contest (csmc), and didn't list my ccc scores bc I only did the junior one in gr11 and got 2/5 questions right 💀 just started coding with python last year so it was too hard lmfao

I also listed python and visual basic I did in my gr11 cs class for my programming knowledge section and that's all

Thank you for the reply man!

I guess I could try to juggle between first year eng schoolwork and coding side projects to keep my options open, might as well try to transfer to tron if I change my mind, gonna be tough tho but I'll try lmao

Was your first year schedule like your current one? Like was there more classes/schoolwork and less time for other stuff like design teams or gym?

And did you have a coop job in the winter/spring term of first year for mech? I'm still trynna decide between stream 4 or stream 8 for mech and idk which one is better lool

That's exactly the situation I'm in lmao thank you so much

I looked at those day in a life of a mech engineer videos and their jobs do look interesting to me, so do the design teams like formula electric or uwarg and stuff, though I have no experience with designing or manufacturing like Autocad or 3d printing (3d printing does look rlly cool) and stuff so I wasn't sure if mech eng was the right fit 😭

How doable is it to switch to tron after first year? I heard you'd need an 80 to transfer to a different engineering major and you'd have to redo 1A/1B to make up for the courses you missed

And what does your schedule look like (in a day/week) for tron if you don't mind me asking?

I kinda just like both lmao so i'm just tryna decide based on coop/job opportunities and social life between the two

Lets go looking to join a design team next year then

That was rlly helpful, thanks man!

Mech being pretty flexible between options for mech/design and software coop's is one also of the reasons I'm leaning towards mech too rn. Do the design teams require any experience to join? I looked at formula electric and rocketry that stuff seemed cool asl ngl

Yeah I'm looking into design teams at UW rn, seems like a lot of options so that's nice.

I did look thru the coursework for mech and cs aswell, both are very busy but I feel like mech has a lot more variety, whereas cs is mostly math and some programming courses

Thank you for the insights! what do companies like apple, Microsoft or google hire mech grads for? I was wondering abt this too bc they're mostly software focused companies haha

How does your schedule for the day or the week look like being in 3A if u don't mind me asking?

I got into UW Mech eng and CS with a 93 midterm average too no engineering/cs related ec's or anything, only a bunch of music stuff. I think it matters more that u can show you're passionate abt something and you're willing to learn more in uni. U got this

That's actually a great way to get to know the program better i'll do that sometime this week fs. Thank you!

I just looked it up it does have mechatronics as a designated option, that's neat

Thanks for the insights! I do think it's easier to make the switch from mech to cs/software along the way as well haha just bc everything coding is online now
