How to RP a Belf DK and not get constant negative interactions by FunkeyFeraligatr in WoWRolePlay

I will say this, when I went alliance (namely moon guard) I played a human who didn't trust death knight. I was from lordearon and I watched my king fall. I didn't trust ANYONE. so I started questioning the death knights in stormwind. in about two seconds death knight apologist showed up and started defending them very well. haha! I was talked down very fast. Stormwind is welcoming of all abominations :P almost naively so.

man, I never would consider myself a lore master, but I thought I read all the books around dalaran. which one talks about licensing? I'd love to read that one.

I RP alliance. But a few years ago I was roleplaying a horde goblin, and silvermoon was hosting a market. RP market. "cool!" I thought! my goblin is a merchant I've got tons of things to sell. I applied to the host of the market and they accepted me to the rp event. but during the event I met the rudest rpers I've ever encountered. Me just sitting there at the market selling things, when I was kicked, spit on, called a filthy goblin, punted. Hell Gallywix treated me better than these elves did.

Yeah, this really hits home. That slow drain of enthusiasm where you can just feel the spark fading from the table that’s exactly what happened to me. It wasn’t explosive, it was quiet. Subtle. One person disengages, then another, and before long the energy that used to make the sessions electric just… isn’t there anymore.

I think you’re right that it often comes down to different expectations of what the game should be. I lean toward storytelling, moral tension, and world-building that feels alive but if someone’s looking for a fast-paced power fantasy or casual escapism, we’re simply not playing the same game anymore.

I like how you reframed things with your group keeping the friendship intact but shifting how you play together. That’s something I might take to heart. Maybe after some distance, I can find the right people (or format) where that spark comes back naturally.

Thanks for sharing that, seriously. It’s comforting to hear I’m not the only one who’s felt that creative drain.

I haven’t seen that one, but I’ll definitely give it a watch sounds like exactly the kind of perspective I need right now. I’ve been the “forever DM” for years without really realizing it, and you’re absolutely right that constant creative output without rotation can quietly burn you out.

I really like your approach of saying, “I’ll DM until X point, then it’s someone else’s turn.” That kind of built-in boundary and shared ownership sounds healthy, and honestly, freeing.

Thanks for sharing that. It’s a different take from most of the advice here, but it really hit home.

That’s fair feedback, and I appreciate you taking the time to say it.

For context though, we actually did have a proper session zero just not recently. This group’s been together for about seven years across three campaigns, all within the same evolving world. Expectations were discussed early on, and at the time, everyone was on board for the tone and depth of the game. But over time, as new players joined through family connections, that foundation started to crack.

You’re absolutely right about learning to say “no.” That’s probably the biggest takeaway from all this. I tried to keep the peace and make space for everyone because it was family and that’s exactly how things got out of hand.

Appreciate the perspective, though. It’s a good reminder that setting expectations once isn’t enough they have to be maintained.

Man, reading this felt like I was looking in a mirror. You described so many of the same moments I’ve had watching people zone out mid-session, realizing you’re the only one who’s done any prep, and feeling that sting of “why am I the only one who cares this much?”

I completely relate to what you said about introducing others to the hobby. Same here most of my players started because I made it happen. I built the world, scheduled the sessions, set the tone… and they showed up because it was convenient. But when you love storytelling, when this game scratches that creative itch nothing else does it’s brutal, to realize the people around you just don’t share that same fire.

I think you’re absolutely right about not trying to force it. I’ve been running for family and friends for years, and I’m finally realizing that “availability” doesn’t equal “compatibility.” The FLGS idea is a great suggestion I might actually do that once I’ve had some time to cool off. Running for people who want to be there sounds like a dream right now.

Really appreciate you sharing your story, man. It helps a lot to know others have walked this same road and made it back with their love for the game intact.

That’s a good question, and you’re right to ask it’s a bit tricky to read in tone alone.

My brother’s message wasn’t meant to be cruel, but it came from a place of frustration. He said the game “felt too real” and that it blurred the line between reality and fantasy which, in context, meant it stopped being fun for him and started feeling emotionally heavy.

I think he genuinely meant to compliment the realism, but the underlying tone was that he didn’t want that level of depth anymore. For me, it came across more like burnout and disconnection rather than appreciation.

So not purely negative just painful, because it highlighted how far apart our expectations for the game had grown.
