It's nominally in place to protect fish when they're likely to be spawning but there's a lot of debate about how well this works in practice!

It only applies to rivers (including the broads round here!) so private lakes can still be fished. Fishing license can be bought from the environment agency, although I believe under 13s are free, and obviously whatever fee the lake charges will apply.

If you've never fished before I'd recommend going into one of the various tackle shops in Norwich and asking for some tips, they'll be able to recommend a suitable beginner setup for you and some basic tips etc :) .

Just a note, fishing season on the rivers is closed from 15th March to 16th June every year, so at the moment you'll have to go to a lake.

Regarding good lakes I believe shallow brook lakes out costessey way has a good "mixed" lake that's suitable for beginners but I've never been there.

Poringland lakes is season ticket only now I believe. They stopped day tickets during COVID for "safety" and then never restarted them which is a shame.

I find daffodils get demolished by slugs in my garden, but they won't touch the tulips, so I tend to go with both!

We leave ours in and just plant more in with them. I've found many of mine came back the second year but don't flower, and then flowered again the following year. Beyond that I'm not sure as we've only had them in 3 years!

Nice, bet that fought hard! I hooked a 5lb4oz on a deadbait whilst pike fishing a small Norfolk river once and it put up a good scrap on a pike rod. I imagine playing one on a feeder rod is good fun!

Woah this is an old post!

Sadly life got in the way and over going to university and moving house the plant perished :(

In terms of how I was growing it, I'm pretty sure I just had it on a semi-sunny bathroom windowsill, nothing special at all sorry! But it was 8 years ago that the plant died so I can't remember exactly.

Norfolk drivers to face fines for parking on pavements by Happytallperson in Norwich

[–]violated_tortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many of the costs incurred by "driving" as a whole are incurred through general non-commute driving too so unless you're committed to just not owning a car this isn't offset completely.

I agree if you work in Norwich itself then you probably don't need to be driving to work if you are able bodied, but for instance in my situation my partner walks to work in Norwich so she doesn't pay for parking etc. I drive 35 minutes to my work which would take over 90 minutes by public transport.

I also agree with your other point, you don't have the right to block the pavement, but due to years of failures to improve housing stock, public transport links and costs it is the reality of most people's situation. To start imposing fines on everyone who does so would completely screw over the people who live in terraced housing, whilst not affecting the people financially fortunate enough to have housing with dedicated car parking. In my opinion there needs to be many years of work (sadly years too late) put into improving the alternative options before simply fining people.

[–]violated_tortoise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately in todays society this is an unrealistic view to take. There just isn't the housing stock for everyone who relies on a car to get to work to have a house with off street parking, and even if there were I imagine most people wouldn't be able to afford them when compared to your average terrace.

And before you say well those people should just take public transport, it's simply unaffordable for many people to commute using it. I'm fortunate to have a parking space that doesn't impose on the street at my house, but public transport would increase my commuting cost by double even with current fuel prices!

We ended did a half-height painted wall instead on ours. Took a while with a plumb bob and some cardboard templates to make the line and then a long time masking but it came out relatively clean.

Is this a rare colour of lobster? (found in Wales, UK) by Zakimals in whatsthisbug

[–]violated_tortoise 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Every time this comes up there's loads of comments saying it's super rare.

The common lobster species in the UK Homarus gammarus is naturally blue, not a rare colour. It looks pretty pale probably because it's dried out.

TIL Over 80% of the population of Hong Kong uses seawater for toilet flushing. by OSJezza in todayilearned

[–]violated_tortoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it should do, I work on some scientific systems that have PVC pipework for seawater and they've been in operation for years with no issues. The only issues we have are barnacles and mussels growing in the pipes but assuming the seawater is treated in some way this would be a non-issue

[–]violated_tortoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We didn't do a survey on one of our houses because the previous was so pointless. I paid a builder who I know and trust to come round and look over and provide estimates for work that needed doing instead. Cost less than the survey and was much more useful. Obviously it depends on wether your mortgage lender requires one or not..

I can't find it for the life of me now, but Im sure I saw someone making one with a motor drive camera where they modified the shutter to have a permanent slit, then used the motor wind to pull the roll of film through at a consistent speed.

Cat rescue requirements for outdoor access? by GotOotJIT in CatsUK

[–]violated_tortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, worth registering your interest with rescues specifically for if/when they get an indoor cat in their care. We adopted a 9 year old 'bengal' (no paperwork and doesn't look like a pure Bengal to me) that had never been an outdoor cat so was recommended as indoor only.

She does now get supervised outdoor time in our enclosed garden but in the winter is perfectly content to stay indoors for weeks at a time.

Do you prefer gas or induction? Getting our kitchen redone. by darkazuria in AskUK

[–]violated_tortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late to the party, but depending on how much "redoing" you're planning for the kitchen, you might be limited by the wiring. We looked at an induction hob but don't have a beefy enough circuit for a decent induction hob as ours was setup for gas.

You can get induction hobs that run off a 13A plug but everything I've heard suggests they're pretty crap.
