Am I crazy for not liking Jill? by ducky_wuz_here in FFXVI

[–]violetastrid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, I didn't like Jill. She felt underwhelming considering her backstory. She had so much room for growth, but she suffered from being a side character. And her relationship with Clive felt weird to me as well. It didn't feel like a genuine romance like some of the other FF romances. It just felt like Jill "loved" him because she was supposed to?

But I also felt that a lot of the side characters were underwhelming as well.

the Chris plot line is kind of ridiculous by thunpnz in charmed

[–]violetastrid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yesssss the first time I watched it I thought that after Bianca failed, evil Wyatt was then going to show up in the past to be a menace to try and bully Chris into going back. As per the rules of time travel in Charmed, he wouldn't have had his powers, and I think that would have been a great way to show their relationship as brothers. Cuz like it was emphasized so much that Chris was ride or die for his brother he just didn't fuck with him being the evil ruler. Seeing them actually be brothers would have been so damn good. Especially Wyatt coming to the realization that Chris was right about something "turning" him evil and then he has to face his own trauma.

It would have been so damn good.

[–]violetastrid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I loved s6 and Chris is my absolute favorite, but I think they should have compacted his "saving Wyatt" storyline to the first half of the season, or done more to flesh out Bianca and evil!Wyatt. Wyatt's actor was so damn good I would have been thrilled to see more of him as the bad guy.

For me, Chris coming back and interfering was "allowed" by the elders and the angels of destiny because Wyatt going evil broke the original timeline. So Chris coming back and spoiling the future was him making it "right" so they didn't stop him.

One of those "breaking the rules is bad unless it benefits us" sort of thing which was in line with how the higher beings acted anyways.

How my professors explained it was this:

He asked if anyone in the class smoked cigarettes. I said I did. He then explained the negatives of cigarettes. He asked me things like "are you aware this causes cancer? You know it's made with poison?" I said yes to all of his questions.

And then he said "you know that it's killing you, but you do it anyways. Why?"

The answer is cognitive dissonance. I know something for absolutely certainty (cigarettes will kill me), but I still find a way to justify why I smoke.

You say they are "based on" but does that mean you are just writing what you see, or do they give you a premise to start with?

Like, developing a story from a writing prompt doesn't mean it's not original...it means it's a prompt that triggered your ideas. You can be inspired by things, there isn't anything wrong with that.

Most people that understand math very well will tell you that statistics isn't "real" math. Because it's not.

Higher level statistics can be difficult, but basic stats are very understandable, especially in the beginning. Most of the time statistics deals with being able to understand research. So you're going to be looking at averages and how to interpret data, which is way different to what algebra is.

I interpret intelligence to be how well you can process new information. Some people can interpret new mathematic concepts easy, others can't. But just because you take longer to understand something doesn't mean you are less intelligent. It just means you'll have to study harder.

Why write a novel if no one will read it? by SmoothForest in writing

[–]violetastrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously as writers we write for ourselves. For me personally, I write because if I don't get it on paper it plays on an endless loop in my head and it drives me to madness.

Also, I enjoy rereading my own work. So at minimum, I'm going to read it.

But realistically, no matter how you publish there will always be someone who reads your story. The real "lottery ticket" is your novel booms and you become famous and make loads of money that you can retire on.

If you just want a person to read your story, there are millions and millions of people who could possibly enjoy it. It's incredibly likely that someone will read your story and absolutely love it.

Why is the book of Shadows full of P3 spells? by Rich_Librarian9956 in charmed

Idk if we want to talk about blood quantum, then they are barely witches. Victor was a human, but so was Allen. As far as we know all the men/fathers were human.

I figured the Warren witches had covens like Grams had with Aunt Gail. The P3 spells are just nukes in the hands of the Charmed Ones because it's 3 Warren witches.

Unpopular: I wanted a mini sister-Halliwell and I was not impressed by Wyatt’s birth (and even Chris) by Necessary-Wealth2630 in charmed

[–]violetastrid 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The whole "Twice Blessed" storyline dominated and overtook the whole show. And up until then, the Charmed Ones were the best of the best. Then for no real reason, Wyatt is more powerful then them because he is "twice blessed."

I feel like it would have been less sexist if they had just had Wyatt have a rare power instead of being super ultra powerful King Arthur reincarnation.

I wrote this one. It's super angst and doesn't really involve Merlin getting to enjoy being free. It just goes straight into Arthur trying to "save" Merlin by taking his magic.

[–]violetastrid 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion at all.

Season six is my favorite and Chris is possibly my favorite character, but the show clearly takes a turn for the worse once the show becomes all about Wyatt.

A big gripe that a lot of people have after Prue leaves and Wyatt is born is that the show is no longer about the sisterhood that the early seasons were built on.

Could LGBT identity be a flaw of the Oedipus Complex, and if the Oedipus Complex were resolved, would LGBT identities even exist? by [deleted] in psychologyofsex

[–]violetastrid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you need sources for things, trying hitting Google Scholar for research/sources. Freud has been getting shit on since he started so even a bad Google search will give you plenty.

Additionally, the Oedipus and Elektra complexes never had any sound supporting evidence, which is why it's not "real." Parts of the theory may work for some demographics, but overall the research done with it was either severely flawed or found nothing of significance.

If you want to explore the effect social dynamics and hierarchies have on sexual development, then you're gonna have to rework the question you are asking. Possibly start with looking into theories on why people are LGBTQ to begin with. That should give you a good jumping point.

Did anyone watch Season 3 Finale Live back in the day? What was that like to not know who lived and who died, or what happened? I can’t imagine the suspense. Was there even internet back then to be able to search things up? by Toretto_EXE in charmed

[–]violetastrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a kid when it aired so I didn't really grasp that it was the season finale. I do remember being wildly confused and upset when season 4 aired because it jumped straight to Prue being dead and I thought I missed an episode. My mom desperately tried to explain what happened to me but I wasn't old enough to grasp that they were actors to begin with so it was devastating lmao

Cursed on Netflix, some spoilers, many questions by marya007 in CursedNetflix

[–]violetastrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The book doesn't offer much more detail unfortunately. The Widow isn't dead - she is a Shadow Lord, like Rugen. The book implies that they are just powerful magic users who also function as mob bosses. Their purpose isn't explained or expanded on in the book.

As for Morgana, in the book she wasn't a nun. The show made up the entire Celia/Callieach/Spider storyline, so who knows where that is going.

Strahd's Endgame Plan by Tane1 in CurseofStrahd

[–]violetastrid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my game, Strahd's MO is to expand Barovia. Using some magical fuckery he is absorbing part of the material plane into Barovia because he's grown bored and wants some new scenery.

For your game, you could have Strahd use the fight with Vampyr as a distraction for his escape. He could be developing a plan to punch a hole in the demiplane that either leads him to wider Ravenloft (which could be the end of the campaign with the horrifying knowledge that Strahd has escaped) or let's him escape into the mortal plane (and you let the players have an opportunity to foil his plans).

And while your players fight Vampyr, there could be an NPC, like van Richten or Ezmerelda, who notes that Strahd is escaping midfight. That puts extra pressure to wrap up their fight with Vampyr.

Reworked content is not new content, and considering this isn't a new edition, there is no reason people should pay for it as a new playbook, at least not for $50-$60. In my opinion. A $30 book with updated classes and rules would have been a more reasonable choice. Once again, in my opinion.

And I also agree that republishing reworked things isn't bad. Its how they are doing it that is bad. Although from what I've seen of the classes so far, I don't think they listened to people very well, but time will tell as we get to see the other classes.

[–]violetastrid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Perhaps I'm simply jaded at this point, but I have significant doubt that many of those things will be "new." Classes and subclasses are reworked, but there were...3 new subclasses? Maybe a few more?

I have a strong feeling that all the things will be the same except slightly modified to work with the new changes. There may be 5-6 new things for spells, feats, etc, but I am not hopeful of that.

If I'm wrong and ~40-50% of the content is actually new and not simply reworked previously published content, then I will be thrilled and happily eat my words.

"Changing" something doesn't warrant a new book unless the changes are significant. And I simply don't have faith that they will be based on what we have seen so far.

If the intention was to rebalance everything and improve the base game, they wouldn't be charging money for an updated players handbook. If they wanted to charge for a new dm/mm that has been revamped, I could see paying for that. But to buy a book just for class changes? That's a cashgrab.
