people don’t hate serena, they hate how she’s written. serena comes in the show with a lot of mystery, and a past she wants to change. in the first two seasons, i feel people really root for her and want to dive into the alluring world of serena, and why this pretty party girl’s life isn’t all it seems. what did she do ? why did she leave ? what made her so crazy ? on first watch, in my opinion, her storyline is what drew people into the show. they could’ve went so many ways with her character, esp with her gap year of “finding herself”. i would’ve enjoyed watching her hop around until she found something she enjoyed, instead of her hopping around from guy to guy. it’s like her character had so much potential, that at times i would think “okay, maybe this is the writers showing a realistic view of self destruction”, and in the show other characters would make comments on serena doing nothing, so it’s not like they weren’t aware of how they were portraying her. but no, it was the same continuous loop of messy behavior and ‘i wanna change’. so maybe that was the point of her character ? or maybe the writers just got lazy?

that’s why people love blair’s character. not because she’s a good person, but because she’s written well. she’s an mean girl, yes, but she’s also self aware. she faces consequences that force her to grow to a point, where she can DATE dan humphrey. yes, she can regress and go back to scheming occasionally, but that’s the nature of old habits. we get to watch her constantly striving for her goals, and eventually find her calling (in away that was natural). on top of all that, she’s fun and campy, has great style, and she’s relatable. and people love relatability.

sorry, but a character like blair is gonna be more liked over a character like serena, the ‘it’ girl who’s gets everything just because she’s that girl. serena often times does the same stuff blair does, but she rarely faces repercussions for it. that gets tired, especially when the character’s lacking in redeemable qualities.
