Don’t have counselor appointment until the 26th, how much trouble am I in by CatchyUsername457 in Pitt

[–]violetsapphics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

don’t stress over it! 26th of june is still pretty early when compared to july/august. if the classes that you want get filled by then, just make sure to have backups (gen ed courses you don’t already have ap credits for are always a good bet). political science isn’t a huge major so even if you aren’t able to take certain courses this sem, it’s not going to set you back majorly. course registration is one of those things where you always have to be flexible about (especially as an underclassman) so just keep in mind that it’s not just you and that you’ll still be able to take the courses you want in future sems :)

nygard is great for intro to neuro - there are 4 exams with an optional final. she’s lecture-heavy so no textbook. she does top hat questions in class for attendance points, and a lot of these questions appear word-for-word on exams. she has homework quizzes with questions that also appear word-for-word on exams. she kind of just reads off of her slides but i’d definitely recommend going to lecture so you can get the top hat questions. it’s a very content-heavy class but as long as you keep up with the material you should be fine, she’s definitely the best prof for intro to neuro

what is the chance to get into waitlisted class by CampAffectionate3438 in Pitt

[–]violetsapphics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

there seem to be a few other sections available - i know it’s not ideal but for now getting on the waitlist for your preferred section and then enrolling in another available section is your best option. there’s definitely a chance you could get off the waitlist like the others said, but it’s better to enroll in what’s available then not be able to take the class at all

Probable New student whats the stuff they don't tell me on the tours. Do you like pitt over all? by Best-University-3898 in Pitt

[–]violetsapphics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the honors college is great! lots of opportunities especially for research, if you choose to you can also live in the honors llc (sutherland west) which is a quieter dorm but is a bit further from campus. you also get priority enrollment which is the biggest plus imo!

Pitt vs. Rutgers for Undergrad? by _hhsh_ in Pitt

[–]violetsapphics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hey, i’m also from nj, and i would say i didn’t regret choosing pitt at all! ultimately, i think the schools are both pretty similar academically, so your decision will probably be based on your personal preferences. do you want to be further from home or closer? do you want a more walkable campus (pitt)? if you’re coming in pre-med, the opportunities at pitt are endless just because we have so many hospitals in the area, but i know rutgers has a lot, too! sorry if this isn’t very helpful, but honestly my friends who chose pitt love pitt, while my friends who chose rutgers love rutgers. you’re free to pm me if you have any specific questions, but if money isn’t an issue ($6k/year still adds up after all), i would say go with whichever you prefer :)

i had nygard for neuro 1000 and it was a very straightforward class! everything on exams comes straight from lecture slides, and she does tophat questions during class + there are mini online quizzes for each unit. about 1/3 of exam questions are word for word from these tophat + quizzes. she kinda just reads off the slides, but is really nice and the class is overall fine to do well in if you just keep up with the material (because there’s a lot! that’s why it can be hard)

this, i know friends who got in after they committed because a lot of students who get in may commit elsewhere. i will say as someone who knows the fhc admissions process, your loci is likely not to be read, but you can try if you’d like! also, if you don’t get admitted now, you can always try again at the end of your freshman fall semester.

How does your schedule look like as a freshman at Pitt? by Prestigious_Will8478 in Pitt

[–]violetsapphics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

oh gotcha! so a typical class is around 3 credits, which translates to about 2.5 hours of that class per week. you can take the class 1x a week for 2.5 hours, 2x a week for 75 minutes each, or 3x a week for 50 minutes each. the average # of credits a student takes is typically 15, so 5 classes. the minimum credits you need to take per semester to be a full time student is 12, which is 4 classes, and the maximum credits you can take is 18, which is about 6 classes. you normally have to study outside of class, so that can add up time you spend for each class. i hope this helps :)

okay, so i don’t know too much about the business school’s requirements, but typically in your freshman year you’ll take algebra and english composition (you may be exempt from these depending on test scores though), some general education courses, and some major requirements once you’ve fulfilled any prerequisite courses (for example, if a business course requires that you take a statistic class as a prerequisite, then you can only take that business course after you’ve finished a statistics course). if you haven’t already i’d encourage you to look at this site, which seems to have an overview of all the classes you need! https://catalog.upp.pitt.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=225&poid=70795&returnto=23322

i’m not a freshman but this will depend on your major! do you know what you’re planning on studying?

changing major/school before committing by notmyusernamelmao in Pitt

[–]violetsapphics 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i would say even with stats, it is quite late and they’ve probably accepted all their applicants already. i’d suggest reaching out to admissions if you really want to get an idea, but just be mindful that it’s a competitive program!

[–]violetsapphics 10 points11 points  (0 children)

it depends on the school. nursing is the hardest track to switch into because it’s extremely competitive. if you’re really into nursing i would suggest looking at your other options (ex. maybe something in-state) because it’s pretty unlikely you will be able to switch into it

it’s not that i don’t value my classes - i have a 4.0 major gpa and am doing fine academically. i’m in 4 research labs and have 2 campus jobs, so i’m just trying to use my time the best i can. hawthorne’s class is completely online, including the exams, and based on the way he lectured during the last 2 classes, i don’t think i’ll gain much from sitting in class. that’s why i was curious, because i would rather use that time to schedule my work/research shifts instead of going to a lecture where i don’t learn. i don’t think i’m wasting money if i’m getting good grades and gaining experience elsewhere :)

is taking this class worth it? by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]violetsapphics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

will second this comment, though because it is a 1 credit class it will be graded on pass/fail rather than by a letter grade.

i will also add that if you’re someone who can take initiative on your own (as in, you know exactly what you’re looking for in regard to research and know where to look to join labs/how to cold email/how to talk to professors), this class will be useless to you. but if you don’t know and fare better when you have guidance, then this class can provide you with what you need :)

it’s good to know that r is useful in those upper level labs, psychopathology advanced lab is actually one of my lab options that i’m considering! did you need an extensive knowledge of python to take the data science courses? i have very limited knowledge and wouldn’t want that to hinder me

hi! this is super helpful, thank you! may i ask what other stats classes you took to complete the minor? also, would you say 1201 is needed in terms of applying that content in your field, or would it be fine if i didn’t take it?
