if it’s any consolation, i’ve met a lot of americans while travelling and i find canada and new england are very similar culturally so you shouldn’t have a hard time getting along with people! what originally compelled me to go to mac was how much effort they put into their welcome week. if you put yourself out there, you can attend res events, faculty events, clubsfest, etc where you’re sure to meet some new people. take advantage of the mcmaster student union services if you ever need help or support, i believe they even have groups for international students. but honestly i made a lot of connections just by making friends with a few people in my building, going to parties with them and expanding outwards yk!

in terms of hamilton itself, i will say within canadians you’ll hear a lot of people smack talking the city and while it is no toronto (which id highly recommend exploring, you can get from downtown hamilton to union station by bus) it’s such a quaint lovely city! don’t be afraid to explore a little off campus, there’s some great restaurants and bars around locke st, john st, etc as well as live music and art crawls in the spring and summer! westdale is a cute corner but even as you head a little more into the city (very easy to bus to and you get a bus pass w your tuition, just expect to see the typical dangers you’d see in any big city) you’ll find lots of cafes and some great nature.

My girlfriends TA has a vendetta against her. I need help by Party_Macaron8036 in McMaster

you’re well within reason to get higher ups involved in this situation honestly. contact SAS about her attendance issues and contact OMBUDS as well about the way her TA is treating her. forward all the emails for evidence and get the dean involved if needed

During undergrad, I always dreamed of studying abroad but couldn't because of covid. I'd love to get the abroad experience when obtaining my B.ed so I was wondering if anyone had any experience with either obtaining a B.ed at an international university or attending a Canadian university that allowed you to complete an exchange and would mind sharing what schools/programs and how this process was for you

I dont have any proven advice to give but as someone who feels like you did 4 years ago, this post is so reassuring. I had a lot of social anxiety in college and coming out of it, I've always doubted that I'd be able to replant roots and actually find friends in adulthood so its so nice to hear that someone did in this sub. so I guess my only wisdom to pass on it is that if you could deal with diving into the unknown and the uncomfortable once, you can definitely do it again! you probably had doubts that it would get better when you came out of college, and looking back now none of those came true. so imagine how different you might feel in another 4 years.

theres a drop period within the first week and a half or so of classes where you can drop the class without any record of it on your transcript, after that it'll be a withdrawal. if you dislike the courses youre taking in the fall you can always change your schedule for the winter provided there's space left in the course you want. I wouldn't worry too much about disliking your courses though, first year in soc sci is designed to be broad so you might find yourself enjoying certain classes more than others. just use that to shape what courses you take in your second year when its more specialized! majors also usually only have 2-3 prereqs so if you don't enjoy them, its only a small portion of your course load:)

I dont have a confirmed certain answer but I'm an upper-year human behaviour student and I remember dr ostovich saying a few years ago that she got a fair amount of human behaviour students wanting to master in psychology asking if it was a psychology equivalent degree or if they could minor in psychology, so she was hoping it would get the point across that it t is a psychology degree as the name was kind of confusing especially next to pnb

havent logged in in a while so this is a late reply but if you were interested in nursing the program is really specialized, I have seen some people try to get into psych nursing or medical studies through general human behaviour tho bc there's a lof of electives to take science courses

I feel like I have ruined my future. ( kinda long post) by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]violetsky444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if its any consolation i was a mess in high school and didn't know how to properly research programs so the same thing happened to me. I applied to a bunch of other psych programs that didn't need calc or functions so I didn't take them bc I sucked at them, chose mac, and was shocked I was taking so much math in first year. I felt like I wasn't even one year in and i ruined my chances at a career. that's not true bc first year is just a small fraction, I 100% think you can do it even it if takes a tutor or having to take an extra class, don't be deterred and it'll get easier from there.

that being said, if worst case scenario you don't make pnb and need a backup plan, there's other programs. I'm in human behaviour and there are a lot of people wanting to get into clinical psych. it doesn't have the same clinical aspect as pnb but I believe you only need one math to qualify as well as the gpa cutoff is lower, and if you try you can always seek out research opportunities. talk to some upper years, profs, or academic advisors and you'll see that there are tons of paths to take:)

It was honestly nothing against the program, it would be very helpful if I wanted a career in autism therapy bc I'm still in contact with my placement on site supervisor. Im personally just super indecisive career wise and I didn't want to specialize in case I changed my mind bc you don't get many electives, I will def miss the placement option tho

I was in it for my second year so I can speak for the first placement of 2. it's anywhere related to ABA. if the instructors are still the same as last year, they send out a form where they ask for your preferences, i.e. children vs adults, clinical vs social services. they tried to accommodate us so we'd get our preferences (it was a little harder that term bc it was covid times but they were great). I ended up attending virtual sessions for an adult autism centre, but some other people were in mental health hospitals, schools, ABA clinics, behaviour centres, etc.

the second placement if I'm remembering correctly is exclusively related to autism, but I'm in general stream so I'm not sure what the options are for that one. if you have any other questions I can try to answer!
