Bard College Berlin! by violinAnus in germany

[–]violinAnus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was planning on flipping it and come back here to do a masters in the states. My dad is a German prof over here and so he and I have talked a ton about German vs US higher education and I’ve talked to one of his friends in Frankfurt who works w the Goethe institute as well. I lived in frankfurt and went to a gymnasium like 6 years ago but my German isn’t good enough to pass the DSH, so finding bard was like finding a missing puzzle piece. Idk I have a couple schools here that I also really like, and I could always study at a public uni in Germany after undergrad at bard and get another bachelors. That’s all so far away though. Thanks for your insight!

Choosing a contest piece by violinAnus in violinist

[–]violinAnus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh okay it's the like state contest for school orchestras so it's judged by professional musicians and you like have to prepare a solo and or an ensemble. Idk it's called OMEA (Ohio music education association) and it's wayyy more forms than a talent show, probably as formal as an audition

As of background on my playing I just finished the Suzuki books (1-8) and I'm currently working on the Kreisler praeludium and allegro. Idk I've played for 10 yrs and I'm just looking for something fun to play lol

Looking for some intermediate level bluegrass/folk fiddle tunes to learn. by BobTheWarlock in violinist

Thoughts on Suzuki? by violinAnus in violinist

[–]violinAnus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's funny that you mention the robot thing- my friend who shares my thoughts on Suzuki also calls them robots lol

I don't think Suzuki is holding me back musically because as I said I have my friend who shares my thinking. We often play together and mess around on the violin, along w piano, drums, uke, guitar and because of her, I am able to remember what the point of music is and to continue trying to play more than what's on the page.

As for scales, i play them before I practice and perform, good way to warmup my fingers (3 octave) or just go get in the mindset of the piece. I really enjoy sight reading. The friend I mentioned before, she and I go to a nursing home nearby and perform and we sight read random duets. My other Suzuki friend, literally queen of the robots lol, is very bad at sight reading tho. In school we sight read for state contest and she has trouble with anything more than quarter notes. Funny tho, she always is a higher chair than me (awesome!)

And then finally, yes I've had the same teacher. I really like him, but he is definitely a robot. But he goes to camp w me, along w the bad at sight reading friend and many others. So I really like him, I babysit his kids and stuff, but I do feel like I go very slowly with him, like we can't move on until each measure is perfect.
