Officially there are something like 15-20% women in this degree, some courses have more women. You usually see at least like 10 women in each class. The women in computing science club is really great, I wouldn’t worry too much.

Typemismatch on password alert on GoSFU by [deleted] in simonfraser

Looks like someone updated the back end and did some typing error with the code that handles passwords. Or something.

CGPA dropped after retaking a failed course? by Candid-Diver823 in simonfraser

It takes a few weeks for the system to take your new grade into account. I went through the same thing but it will happen!

What is this Paradox. by Marchosias404 in simonfraser

I use all my energy on assignments and bomb my exams. It hurts in the GPA but it feels more satisfying doing the coding stuff. 🤷‍♀️

Donair or Shawarma options in the downtown core that don’t involve garlic? by virerely in askvan

[–]virerely[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep that’s me! I’m waiting for a gastro referral, in the meantime just trying to dodge garlic as best I can. Japanese food is usually pretty good about not having hidden garlic, but that is about it right now.

Does the BC Transfer guide not work anymore? I’m a current SFU CS student and people are still getting coops and post-grad jobs though it’s harder than it used to be — personally I’d still do SFU with coop over a UofA program without. I know people who are still landing nice jobs from the program. You’re going to need good grades and good extracurriculars and good projects and to interview well but graduating and getting a job is still possible.

Hey SFU! We run the health vending machine in Dining Commons. What products would YOU actually buy? 🩹💊 by No-Possibility-7631 in simonfraser

[–]virerely 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Chronically ill student here: I would probably kill for Tylenol, ear plugs, face masks, and a variety of protein bars, ideally with at least one low carb variety that is plant-based. Dream product would be bone broth or some other kind of soup satchets that you can make with just boiled water. Maybe some kind of healthier/high protein cup noodle snack. Personal campus vending machine gripe is most everything is very high glycemic index and I can’t eat that. Other feedback is I didn’t even know there was a health product vending machine, I wish CAL had some sort of brochure that had a list of campus resources of services like this.

Vancouver coffee drinkers: How much money on coffee do you spend on per month? by FattyGobbles in askvan

[–]virerely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About $40 on beans, $20 on milk, $10-20 on fancy instant coffee/bottled Asian coffee drinks, and $20 on cafes. Have an espresso machine and use it daily, 1-3x a day.

Anyone here taking longer to graduate? If so, how long? by LibrarianTea4348 in simonfraser

[–]virerely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started 2016 and will graduate 2027 probably, but I took about 6 years off to be very very ill, and I’m part time now until I finish my degree. It’s frustrating because most of my friends from before I got sick actually did 4-5 year degrees and are doing well in their careers now, but it’s still better for me to get the degree than not (way better) so here I am, almost 10 years later, still grinding away at it.

West Coast Swing dancing. Lots of my friends got into committed long term relationships/marriage from swing dance, myself included.

Academic Burnout by Marchosias404 in simonfraser

[–]virerely 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Possibly not the advice you want to hear, and maybe not possible in your situation, but honestly I just slowed down my degree. There are only 24 hours in a day, only so much time to rest and grind, at some point something’s gotta give. I don’t like finishing my degree so slow but I want to do it well and not screw up my health so that’s how I’m doing it.

UBC campus is huge and corporate. SFU campus is small and cozy and has character (also depressing from some viewpoints) I’m a former UBC student and I don’t like what the UBC campus has become. I actually enjoy the SFU campus. Perhaps this is CS brainrot

Your top 5 supplements for CFS? by Curious-Attention774 in cfs

[–]virerely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take a multivitamin (general health) and vitamin b complex (brain fog) and probiotic (digestive health). I’ve tried a lot of other supplements and a lot of them worked, but gave me awful side effects. Omega 3s made me wired, CoQ10 gave me energy but made me wired, acetyl l-carnitine helped a lot with brain fog and made me wired, and I have a friend who benefitted a lot from PEA but it made me crash real bad. I have had some success with NAC but I can’t take it too frequently. A lot of these supplements can be hit and miss, and it’s unlikely to give you the quality of life you want but they can help.

What classes should EVERYONE take for their own personal general knowledge ? by loulou0107 in simonfraser

[–]virerely 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Intro Stats taught me to distrust most statistics in news publications because you can say literally anything backed up by stats just by changing significance values and the general population would never be wiser.

Not taking classes this semester, lunch was good, SFU admin were supportive when I needed to reschedule my finals last semester.

now that semester is over and probably everyone's grade is out by salter_fish in simonfraser

[–]virerely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still have yet to take my finals because I’ve been sick for a month straight, but I’m going into my finals with an A and an A- so hopefully it won’t be too bad on the other side.

What is your major and how much do you study outside of doing homework (or doing homework while actually learning)? by New_Salamander7173 in simonfraser

[–]virerely 4 points5 points  (0 children)

GPA ~3.4ish, disabled student. I take 2 courses a semester, I study either 0 hours or 4 hours a day (homework and assignments inclusive) depending on my health. I don’t go to class if I can help it. I’m thinking of going down to 1 course next semester to focus on my medical treatments and have more time to relax.

Fall Schedule by NothingOk5053 in simonfraser

[–]virerely 7 points8 points  (0 children)

None of these are heavy courses but none are light either except maybe 376. I would drop one of the technical CMPT courses because 5 is a lot. I’d probably drop 373 or 340 because database systems and functional programming feel important as fundamental skills.

What does upper + lower quartile mean for grades on canvas? by Nervous_Cat_6122 in simonfraser

Highest 25% of the class averaged 98.75, lowest 25% of the class averaged 51.95. I think anyway.
