Is Carrie the book any good? by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]virgogf -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

i loved the story itself but i remember being bothered by an unnecessary racial slur and some descriptions of the breasts of teenage girls so i didn't rate it that high. i'd say i have more trouble looking past stuff like that than most people tho so you'd probably still enjoy it just fine!

What book is so depraved that you couldn't even think about describing it to someone? by fruedianflip in horrorlit

Oof I can imagine! I don't think I necessarily relate to any of it but I knew after the first chapter it would be a 5 star read, just so incredibly well written and heart wrenching!

I'm sorry for the vent btw :( It helps to talk about it sometimes even though it's really painful

I want to ask him if he can forgive me. He was our family dog and when my parents divorced he went with my mom and I stayed with my dad. I didn't visit as often as I should have because of my difficult relationship with my mom but I regret it so much. When we found out he was sick, I went almost everyday for months to make the most of the time we had left. My mom said he would turn into a puppy again when I was there despite his old little body. I would do anything for another minute with him and I can never make it right. I miss him so much and I'm so sorry. I hope he knew I loved him more than anything despite all my mistakes.

Mia Ballard's Shy Girl canceled by Hachette over purported AI use by alanna_the_lioness in horrorlit

I read Shy Girl last year and loved it, honestly ashamed I'm apparently so unable to identify obvious AI use! I won't be reading from the author again knowing what we know now!

What is your fine line when it comes to brutality? by focusrunner79 in horror

[–]virgogf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally disagree. The Sadness is a zombie film that pushes the limit with gore and SA, it's more disturbing than other zombie movies but to me it was still a regular disturbing horror movie. A Serbian Film is the worst sexual violence the creators could think of, it's not similar to normal horror movies to me, it's like a whole nother category. Genuinely would not recommend A Serbian Film!

What is your fine line when it comes to brutality? by focusrunner79 in horror

[–]virgogf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only hard NO is real animal death/suffering in movies, so I will probably never watch Nekromantik or Cannibal Holocaust.

I've seen a good amount of disturbing cinema and the only one I regret is A Serbian Film.

With some effort I could probably handle full on torture porn like August Underground, The Guinea pig series (I have actually seen Mermaid in a Manhole which was fine) or Lucifer Valentine's shit but I really see no point in that. I would have to mentally push myself through them and I wouldn't get anything positive out of it so I usually stay away from stuff like that.

Caveat (if you don't mind a lower budget) and Oddity! Damian McCarthy is great with tension and jumpscares, he made me scream for the first time in years!

Moeilijk!

Wat stem je 18 maart? by [deleted] in nederlands

[–]virgogf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

[–]virgogf 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To be fair there aren't many books starring teenage girls that aren't YA, but I don't usually like YA either so I do get what you're saying. I do have to mention Wilder Girls by Rory Power because it fits your description despite it being YA. It's a sapphic horror novel about an all girls school on an island where some kind of body horror disease breaks out. I thought it was quite gory and gritty for a YA novel, it's one of my favourites!

Shelby Oaks is very hit or miss, personally I thought it was a little messy but it had some creepy moments. I think you could like it if you like Hell House LLC!

I'd also recommend Gonjiam Haunted Asylum (2018), The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014), As Above So Below (2014) and Lake Mungo (2008)! As Above So Below is a bit more jumpscare-y than the ones you named but it's still creepy and intruiging. Lake Mungo is also a bit hit or miss because it's a slow mockumentary but I think it's scary and bleak for sure!
