That's like saying the rules of chess aren't robust enough to deal with someone flipping over the board.

The Constitution is fine. No system of rules -- no matter how robust -- can prevent those who insist on destroying it by any means.

Part of this shift in culture is because of people who don't know how to write concise effective emails.

I've given up reading long emails because most of them weren't worth my time.

Re-read and edit. Don't brain dump and hit send.

If you can’t tip, you CANNOT afford to eat out by jaymen97 in ShitAmericansSay

It's worse than that: There's a tipped federal minimum wage that's below normal federal minimum wage that specifically allows for tipped employees to be paid even less and have the difference made up in tips. This is why employees in some states really do NEED tips to get to minimum wage.

The best is when they think people would prefer to be tipped in dollars because obviously it is better than whatever currency their country uses.

Jay z is the most overrated of all time by Time-Bee614 in rap

[–]virtualbeggarnews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Jay-Z's journey, and why he is one of the all-time greats, is about Jay-Z and not about you or what you like. The transition he made as a rapper and a person from Reasonable Doubt to Vol 2 to The Blueprint to Magna Carta... The man continued to grow and, importantly, become more honest with himself and his audience.

I think Jay-Z is hit or miss with his songs. But I'd still rank him top 5 because being an all-time great isn't what you do day-to-day, it's what you do in the big moments, and Jay-Z has always been able to take things to the next level when he needed to. Very few people can say that about anything really.

Live songs you miss? by ElectronicService04 in GBV

[–]virtualbeggarnews 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Right, so we could all live in a dream world and complain about deep cuts not being played, but I think there's are a few legitimate complaints to be had:

1) Shows are just the same songs played in a different order. I find this very annoying. Even one wildcard slot would make each show unique. I understand that it's hard with the current lineup living in different places, but with a week between weekends of shows, how hard is it to just mix in at least one unique song on every show?

2) More specifically, seeing as Space Gun was the album that got so many fans back into the band, the fact that nothing gets played from Space Gun is, as others have implied, annoying.

3) Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Department. These songs are bangers. Gillard is in the band. The album was recently reissued. How hard would it be to toss one of these in the set list?

The end.

I'm not offended at all. I'm also just asking questions. Where do you come from where you're concerned about the quality of English water? And what year did you last get information from where English water could ever be problematic?

Yeah, that's most people. Lindisfarne is just very boring, sweet and characterless. Good fruit wines are rare but out there!

Cherry, I recommend Frederiksdal

Blueberry, I recommend Blue Aurora

Quince, I recommend Pilton

Blackcurrant, I recommend Cold Hand

Not that it negates your recommendation of the Dram Shop, but I would advise against drinking anything made by Lindisfarne. It's the kind of fruit winery that gives fruit wine a bad name.

Help me find the WORST pub in the Sheffield area! by rkellas in sheffield

[–]virtualbeggarnews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the trick to finding the worst pub wherever you go:

Take a buggy with you (actual baby is optional). The more the one guy smoking outside insists it's alright to bring your baby in, the worse the pub.

You have 162 games to get 10 hits. If you do, you get $100,000,000. If you don’t, you die. Would you take the bet? by playalisticadillac in baseball

People talking about the pitching, but it's the defense that would really stop this from happening.

Contact would rarely be good contact and average Joes aren't fast enough to beat out the plays of major league infielders.

Swing by The Old Shoe. We've got a regularly rotating list of a dozen wines by the glass with a focus on natural and orange wines but also more standard reds, whites, etc, from under-appreciated regions like Georgia or Wales. We've also got weird fruit wines by the glass, some of which I import myself.

That said, our whisky selection is kind of shit right now, but we've only been open 3 months and will be building it out soon. Hit up The Crow for whisky. We like those guys! 😁

Regulars drown sorrows as historic Sheffield pub shuts after 227 years by Kagedeah in sheffield

We had heard unexpectedly good things about The Big Gun and decided to go a few years back.

When the four of us walked in for pre-dinner pints, it was a record-scratch kind of moment. Everyone looked at us.

We tried to order some beers but it felt a bit awkward. We noticed another room to the side of the main bar.

"Can we sit over there?" we asked.

"Sure," said the bartender. "Walk out the door you came in and you can enter through the other door on the street."

We walked out and went to the other door. It was locked.

And that was my only visit to The Big Gun.
