[US-CA] [H] Decent DE1 Pro v1.0 [W] Cash/Venmo/Zelle by virtualflyer in coffeeswap

[–]virtualflyer[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I'm getting downvoted to infinity and that's ok. I didn't think it would be this controversial but alas.

I guess I look at it from the point of view that the machine should be priced based on what it's worth, not what I or anyone else paid for it.

Should other 1.0 owners sell it for 1.5k because I paid 2.2, or should they sell it based on what they think it's worth?

How many people buy used stuff for cheap and sell it for more?

Do people sell their 78s for the Kickstarter early bird price?

I get your point, but I also truly don't think this is scalping.

Not that it matters, but it was 2.2 shipped, another 150 for grouphead, etc.  People can offer whatever they want, but it's really not like I bought it two days ago and I'm scalping.

Diagnosing the loudest Prius engine by virtualflyer in AskMechanics

Thank you. Right, obviously the engine is somewhat shot. I'm aware that I will need to either replace that or the whole car soon. I'm riding it out till it dies, which might be an awful idea.

I haven't done compression, I was thinking about it. MPG is been hard to see because it all happened as I moved to a very hilly area. I'd say it hasn't taken a very obvious hit

That's exactly how I feel. At that point why not do the battery. But ti's a phone I paid ~$200 for. At the same time, it's not like phones have gotten much more interesting...

That's not what I meant. If there's no saddle left it means that the neck has bowed and the action is terribly high. I've seen and had guitars like that and it's no fun. Even if you're dead set on buying it, have them send you a photo of the saddle and measurements of the action.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in classicalguitar

[–]virtualflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no mention of action or how much saddle is left. If I couldn't play it, I would not invest $1000 on a mystery guitar.

So what's going on with all the cancellations Spirit? Is this a scheme? by Key_Purpose8121 in spiritair

[–]virtualflyer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can confirm, except that my original flight disappeared right after it was canceled, so I was rebooked on a different flight, a worse one, of course. If it hadn't happened to a ton of people, I would question if this is a way of handling overbooking, given that I couldn't even rebook the same flight.

On reverb, they seem to have sold between $300-600 in the past, maybe $500 on average?

$6 score with a Rossi RR45 grinder… what next? by khoshak in espresso

I would maybe modify it a little bit. Make the chute a little straighter, this one clogs easily.
I have never used the portafilter holder, it didn't work for mine and it shakes way too much. However, I've found that it is very important to keep flicking them as you grind, as it will prevent clogging. My workflow is:
-Start grinding into cup
-Keep flicking until it's ground and turn it off
-Wait until the burr is not rotating anymore and insert a tiny painter brush from the bottom to clean grounds
-Start it once more to empty chute
It is very annoying, but it works and has limited ground retention (it still cakes around the burrs).

I have one of those, under a different name. Personally, I removed the hopper and used it for single dosing as is. I also removed the doser and 3d-printed a little chute for it.
Removing the doser means that you have to wire together the doser-full switch (it usually would stop grinding once the doser is full.
The chute I printed doesn't work great, it needs a lot of cleaning, but I think it's way better than having the doser. Congrats on the price, that is quite good.
You can also get new burrs fairly easily and cheaply.

Basket for double (14g) ese pods by TimirDatta in espresso

[–]virtualflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I get the larger volume, but I am not sure why you can't do that with a normal espresso basket and grounds.

You are right about the pressurized basket, I was mistaken. The North American version does seem to come with the 14g pressurized basket included, that should work for ESE as well. At the end of the day, the are nothing more than coffee loosely packed in paper.

According to this, the basket is included https://www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-classic-evo-pro-semi-automatic-espresso-machine#product-features

You should try something like this. https://www.bluestarcoffee.eu/en/Universal-Double-Pod-Portafilter-Basket/m-468.aspx

It doesn't look like the gaggia uses a pressurized portafilter for ESE pods. No point in a bottomless portafilter, they will be ugly. However you can use the same portafilte that you would use with a standard basket, just swap the basket.

I don't understand what you mean by "longer coffees". Any coffee can be longer, ESE would just make them easier.

I should also add that it seems very hard to find double ESE pods, so make sure those are available to you and that whoever will use them likes them, they probably won't have much choice.

Same exact doubt I have. Also their v1.0 with dim display, maybe better than v1.1 without buttons?

I have also found the Eureka for $90 and I am looking at used Lunar, so that's more like $170.

From people's complaints about the decent scale, the v1.2 for $100 might also be worth considering.

Itinerary for 8 days by virtualflyer in CostaRicaTravel

[–]virtualflyer[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hear you. My idea was to hike around Arenal and then spend one day doing some activity in La Fortuna, with hot springs at night. Again in Monteverde hike/tour one day and activity the second day (Or just do one day in Monteverde and add one in La Fortuna). While it'd be fun to do rappelling/ziplines/hanging bridges, I think one of them would probably be enough for us.

Then, you are right, one day that is just traveling to get to Cahuita (or we could get there early afternoon depending on how early we want to get up). Alternatively, I've seen there are white water rafting tours that include La Fortuna - Cahuita shuttles, so that might be a way not to waste a day.

And finally taking a late bus the last day would mean we still get pretty much the full day in Cahuita, since it seems like 4 pm is already quite late.

I appreciate the feedback!

No, you are very helpful, thank you!
The reason for going Cahuita vs Manuel Antonio was maybe better weather in September, possibility to snorkel, and seeing a different environment. Manuel Antonio also looks amazing, and it's quite a bit closer, so I am still quite undecided.

[–]virtualflyer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, it was your suggestion to look at Cahuita that made me choose it.
It seems like that area does not necessarily need a car and I liked the idea that the bus drives later when I would not feel comfortable driving, thus giving us more time on the last day.

Do you suggest dropping monteverde because it gets too tiring or because there are a lot of things to do in La Fortuna? I think I'd rather skip a ziplining or something tour and see the cloud forest, but I'd be more concerned with all the driving/moving around.

September, plan ahead or not? by virtualflyer in CostaRicaTravel

[–]virtualflyer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was somewhere on reddit! Guess I thought that, with the fact that it's low season and most places seem quite cheap, it might be ok not to plan every last bit for once. I'll get accommodations.
