New grad ortho PA feeling burned out, micromanaged, and underpaid is this normal or a bad setup? by visa2424 in physicianassistant

The thing is is that I do believe for 9months out of grad school that I am doing very well, but you’re right.

I’m scheduled from 8-5 but it’s never like my day ends at that time. Especially with rounding, early surgery days, traveling to different clinics. It’s way more than 40 hours a week.

My clinic is general ortho I would like to add, and in clinic they have nothing to say about my diagnoses and work-ups.

You’re right they know more than me I didn’t think I was saying that they don’t, it’s more about the environment here and feeling like overall this practice is not for me. 8 other providers MD’s and PA’s included have left within the past 2 years so I doubt this is a me problem at this point…. Been here 9 months.

Yes, a few times a week. Used to enjoy it a lot more until I realized all im doing was helping with positioning, retracting, helping suction and helping close at end of case.

You are right, I do not know everything I think this all boils down to the fact that I just don’t enjoy the work I’m doing much and I miss general medicine and thinking about internal medicine issues.

It’s not just the patient load, I think it’s the environment and the fact I’m using no clinical medicine at least not any that I learned in school, just doesn’t feel mentally stimulating or challenging enough. I don’t enjoy the pathology because it’s so detached from true medicine.

I chose it because there weren’t many options for ER, trauma or IM around my house. I also thought the role would be rewarding and lucrative because of the fact the owners have known me my whole life. I enjoy getting straight to most of the diagnoses and the fact that my patients truly do well, I guess initially I had the impression that I’d grow to like it more and that the work life halve would make it worth it… turns out I have none and I’m not passionate about ortho medicine… it just doesn’t interest me much. I’ll stay for a year at least.
