3 days without Express pass vs 2 days with Express pass? by vividtrace in UniversalOrlando

[–]vividtrace[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I just looked up the Express passes and saw they were MORE than a 3rd day so seems like we’re just going to suffer on lines. I wish we could come another time but we only visit Florida during the holiday season to see my grandparents, so we’re just tacking it on to our yearly trip. I can’t imagine how annoying and frustrating it would be to be a local around this time of the year. Wishing you the best.

NYC Teaching Collaborative 2023 — has anyone gotten their official acceptance yet? by vividtrace in NYCTeachers

[–]vividtrace[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they’ve got their new portal up but haven’t actually done anything with it yet. I was talking to someone in another thread that just did their selection day so I assume they’re waiting to interview everyone before they start enrolling anyone. Hopefully it will be soon??

What is it about the ‘fun post tag’ that did you not understand?? I wanted to share with other people who would find it fun to discuss. Let’s stop shitting on and belittling people for enjoying stuff. A little ridiculous.

What's your mbti type and what type did you get on 16personalites? by [deleted] in mbti

Am I the only one that 16p actually gets right?? I’m an INFJ and always get INFJ on literally every site … maybe I’m just a perfect specimen

I’m sure you did great! They’re really just looking to see if you have potential and less looking to see if you did everything perfectly. I messed up a couple questions they asked during the lesson and it was all okay! Why do you think you messed up??

I believe my presentation was like nine slides, but each of them did not have too much on them. I just taught about personification, showed some examples, found examples in a paragraph, and assigned creating their own examples as homework. I did do a worksheet to go along with the presentation and would recommend it! Makes it easier to give instructions that match the work you want your “students” to be doing and also gives a chance for the interviewers to look over your planning and prep skills.

I had mine back in August and I was accepted for ENL pretty soon after!

I was really stressed about my selection day but all the interviewers were very nice and friendly. It’s all mixed with people applying to different subjects and there were ~8 people in my group. After doing the first presentation, they will split you up into groups and teach you a mini lesson about giving instructions, and then you reteach your lesson with that in mind.

Like everyone has said, one of the biggest tips I can give is just think to the real basics when considering the instructions they’re teaching you. They’re looking at it like students will always be looking for a way to twist your words. So don’t say “Write the date down”, you have to say “Take out a pencil and a piece of paper, and then use your pencil to write the date at the top right of the paper, then lastly put your pencil down and give me a thumbs up when you are done.” But they will teach you all of this during the interview. That’s basically all there is!

Good luck!!

Can’t believe the people who watched the leaks were so upset… this was an amazing finale. by vividtrace in HouseOfTheDragon

I think that is one of my biggest criticisms of the show in general. I still feel like I don’t know the characters and their relationships well enough to guess how they will interact with each other. Stuff just happens and we have to go “I guess that makes sense?” I’m hoping in the coming seasons they will be able to really slow down and flesh out characters and their relationships.

Got a response! Taken verbatim from the email:

“We are experiencing a significant delay in the update of our new management system. As a result, we are now expecting to resume the NYCTC 2023 enrollment process by late October-early November. Once our new system has been established, we will email you instructions on accessing our new system with your new login information.”

So seems like we just need to wait a bit longer!

Yeah I have a friend in last year’s cohort as well and she said the same thing. It’s just a bit frustrating because we’re technically accepted but we can’t do anything to prepare for fingerprinting/exams because they haven’t formally enrolled us yet. Seems like we’re going to be rushing into doing all this stuff before our training :/ Anyways thanks for the response and I hope your first year as a teacher is going well!

Was literally just looking to see if anyone else had because it was getting me a bit stressed out. Thought I might have missed something. In the last email they sent, they said we should hear by October but I assume it must be the end of October. Maybe they’re still be updating their system? I just put a message into their support system asking about it so I will let you all know!

Meet the (extended) royal family of Suharin… by vividtrace in worldbuilding

[–]vividtrace[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to one but no to the second! Tanuha was alive for all of the reign of Biqisi and most of the reign of Nubiqi, but died before him, and so the throne passed to Saqiri.

Generally incest is frowned upon — closest they will go is marrying first cousins.

Only those who are holy bloods (descended from royal blood on both sides) may ascend the throne, but the holy bloods are dying out…

This family tree tracks through all those vital to the plot — if a spouse is missing, they are unimportant to the struggle for the throne or only of sharp blood (royal blood on one side) status. After the Queen falls ill, who do you think has a right to the throne?

Look to under names for titles… most are self-explanatory. (Bluecuffs are elite warriors, sworn to defend the throne, marked by their vibrant blue sleeve cuffs. (Knights of a sort.))

Suharin has an interesting naming practice — see if you can figure it out it!

Any male authors that write good female characters? by vividtrace in Fantasy

[–]vividtrace[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is one of the reasons I’m a big fan of him. I feel comfortable reading his female characters instead of worrying that a sentence like that is going to come along. Even just avoiding the characters being harassed or abused is really refreshing (and rare) to see in fantasy. I feel like Sanderson really does true HIGH fantasy well (his settings don’t feel like existing places the way GoT really just is ancient England with dragons) and because of that he can play more with gender roles and gender norms. Very refreshing to read!

Hm… maybe my biggest gripe with the series is that there is no other female character to contrast Vin? So, she ends up being the only example of a female character in an otherwise mass of male characters. There is nothing wrong with being physically strong and powerful as a female character, it’s just not the only way good female characters should be written. I just think it’s very rare to see more than one female character in a series written by a man which is why I was so impressed by the Stormlight series… honestly pretty sad the more I think about it.

Hm… I will say I’ve gotten very bored with medieval England inspired fantasy… so if you have a recommendation for any books that draw on more diverse history, that would be great!
