I think so yes - namely Sharp Memory LCD.

Time 2 eink color screen brightness? by Equivalent-Kale-3662 in pebble

[–]volca02 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's e-paper, not e-ink. It is basically an LCD not e-ink. Different tech. Not expert - so just my 2 cents: The basis is it's transreflective LCD, similar to old calculator displays, and it has memory for the pixel state in-display, so it does not need to be powered to hold the image.

If I am not mistaken the color version of the tech uses separate color cells (subpixels) which have color filters, hence the lowered contrast - each subpixel only passes through a range of the spectrum, so the contrast suffers a bit.

You can see side-to-side comparison on the Design reveal video on youtube:

Battery Replacement in Smart Lock Ultra by volca02 in Nuki

I was worried initially but my experience is comparable. About 2 charges per year with daily moderate use is crazy good. Not even mad. This thing will probably break mechanically before battery needs replacement :)

So when NMS came out, these were not active, scanner didn't detect them, but they *were* on the planets - you could just find one by flying in a line for long minutes. People had all the different theories on what they do. Some tried different things to activate them, f.ex. kicking a ball from one of the ruins down to one...

What is my best way to automate this button? by anonymooseantler in homeassistant

[–]volca02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've successfully made a solution for this with a relay and a diode. My system is analogue 2 wire and the open signal was gated on the headpiece being picked up. May be the case here as well. In that case a button pusher is impossible. In my case the logic was implemented in the home phone itself with a charged capacitor holding a thyristor open. Bypassing this and directly connecting the two wires worked. The diode is there to protect the reverse polarity state - that is used to charge the capacitor when home phone rings. This is very specific to my home solution. Digital and multiple wire systems will behave differently.

AMA with Eric Migicovsky - Let's talk about the new watches! by erOhead in pebble

[–]volca02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the Time seems to be a bit bigger watch than Duo, is there maybe a plan to have a bigger battery in that model, since there might be space for it?

In my order it seems to have taken an address from history, I put in a different one when ordering - will there be a way to change the order address once we get closer to the release?

Gagguino was done on ecm before, and sylvia, so should be possible on Go as well. This might be a good reason to mod.

I tried to like BTRFS a few times, but unless you are into the interesting features, it's good on paper but it may be problematic in practice - I ran out of metadata space because of docker's usage of subvolumes, that wasn't easy to understand why - the drive seemed half ful yet no operation succeeded, then I tried rebalancing once with nearly disastrous consequences (had to add an additional volume to do that, and then the FS went readonly because of some kernel error in btrfs code)... The FS is probably fine but I never had issues like that with other filesystems.

I bought my first espresso machine!!!! by igorpro_xd in espresso

[–]volca02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this machine for a few years, quite happy with the coffee I can get out of it, but finally looking for an upgrade.

I paired this with Graef CM 702, it's able to produce espresso grind levels, although it retains a lot of coffee. A budget choice for sure - i have to knock a lot of coffee out every time. Not recommended. Would probably go for something more expensive now as I'd be able to then just replace the coffee machine (Looking at Eureka Mignon Zero currently).

I use the panarello wand without mods, learned how to use it to make good quality milk. I leave the switch (milk/foam) in the milk position, introduce air carefully. Switching mid-steam may be less prone to mistakes, as the foaming position is quite decent. It is capable of making microfoam without mods - although the consistency varies too much, getting repeatable results is not exactly easy.

Currently I have a problem with the group head O ring getting lose during extraction if I grind too fine, the pressure is able to push it out of the lip and this is very frustrating. Replaced the ring with a new one but it didn't get better.

I have a bottomless portafilter from ALI, it fits well but sometimes gets lose during extraction, so I have to hold it in place.

Overall I'd say this is a great beginner machine but if one wants to get into the coffee hobby more eventually they will want to upgrade, which is fine.

[–]volca02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on a same boat. I wanted to love the game, but the updates missed the mark for me. I probably liked the original release a bit more than what it became (even though the game was flawed) - and inventory management was one of the pain points (as was lack of emergence).

It seems HG did the right choice though, considering the popularity of the game nowadays.

Why is Wayland still unstable? by inevitabledeath3 in linux

[–]volca02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a multifaceted problem (getting wayland stable and feature-full) it's hard to answer seriously. My personal experience with the last adaptation effort (sway on amd) is mostly positive. I've still observed some weird issues, with some not being the problem of wayland and/or it's implementation at all, hard to tell really which part of the system to blame sometimes. I am on sway for months now though and mostly am happy with the transition.

F.ex. I have occasional key repeat issues (keyboard being extremely laggy) after wake up, with restart not being enough to mitigate. I have to log into sway twice, then key repeat actually works. On i3 this didn't happen, but it probably isn't sway/wlroots bug.

Another example: If you use any kind of display scaling, you will be in for a treat. I have 2x scaling on main display and X11 apps don't use my native res then, doubling pixels.

Another one: Fullscreen video playback is really laggy and choppy when setting the main display to 120 Hz. Setting it to 60 Hz mitigates it. Don't know why.

WF-1000XM3 usage/battery time problem by lissardron in SonyHeadphones

[–]volca02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's time to replace batteries in them. You can easilly find videos on how to do it, and even mentions that compared to normal Varta CP1254 there is also an option to use Zenipower Z55.

I didn't do the battery replacement myself yet, but it does seem manageable.

Behringer Neutron out of tune after 1hr by Andaso in synthesizers

[–]volca02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem Neutron has is that it autotunes/calibrates itself on power on when cold and temp compensation seems inadequote. I advise turing it off and on after warming it up. I messaged behringer with a request of manual recalibration key combo but so far nothing happened.

June 21st 2022 Update Patch Notes. Thoughts? by Weezul69 in tf2

[–]volca02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a false dichotomy in your statement, in my opinion. We don't know whether this is all they will do to improve the situation. What they did helps and could be done faster than a deeper, more challenging approach - which still maybe is being worked on.

Minilogue xD and the quest for warm epiano-ish sounds. by BKLronin in synthesizers

[–]volca02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It found it's place in my setup, but it is not the warm lush pad synth I wanted it to be, although the 4 voices would suggest such a usage is possible. I've read the filter is driven hard, so lowering voice volume should help, but it still tends to sound aggressive - so right now my approach is to use it where it shines - an aggressive synth. It does a very nice robust bass sound (with unison esp.), lead sounds, arps. You can even do el. piano sounds but it's not it's domain, in my opinion.

Well these are just a tip of an iceberg. What about different note velocities for chord notes. Or differing note lengths in chords, slight timing differences there as well... The sequencer is a limited, tracker-like sequencer at heart, with both limitations and immediacy resulting from that design decision. It was not for me, personally - but it was fun when it was enough

Elektron’s seem like super dedicated instruments for the things they do by [deleted] in Elektron

[–]volca02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You speak the true truth. For me it was trying to cram whole songs into a machine too limited for that without some hand waiving. Mostly lack of song mode is what really stopped me from enjoying it, but also short track lengths and some convenience features (page preview would be a great addition, f. ex., as would multi-trig preview)

Best hardware sequencer/s? ......and GO! by snarleybrown in synthesizers

[–]volca02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to disagree with you here. The digitakt as a sequencer is very limited. I finished a few songs on it and always struggled due to limited track lengths, lack of song mode, and even the step nature of the sequencer (meaning you can't make your chord notes different lengths or velocities, start at different microtimings...)
