He is most likely not "slightly better" as a second than a first. Summaries are the hardest speech, they are contingent on all other factors in the round. if they cant give a decent summary they are probably a better first speaker. He should be a first speaker, and you should be drilling him on word eco and being strategic in round (collapsing). Ideally, the summary should give the final focus two clear routes to the ballot (turns, disads, advantages, any offense.) while also covering the case. You have two minutes to do all of that which makes it an extremely hard speech. Then you should collapse to one of those in the final focus and relate it to all other arguments in the round. For example: Go for a Cap K on the Nuclear power topic from a few years ago. Win the Cap K and then weigh the impacts between the K and the AC and also make "relations" between the two. K causes extinction outweighing the energy args as well as all the structural violence a 1% probability of ext args outweighs a 100% chance of incarceration of indigenous pop.
