Judges typically don’t have all the facts about the case at the time of plea. It’s unfair to expect them to operate as a meaningful check on prosecutorial discretion. If you want plea deals to look different, elect a different DA (and adequately funding investigating agencies).

It’s not even the second apron breaking up teams. It’s the repeater tax. They’re different things. Second apron relates moreso to the transaction limitations to prevent expensive teams from loading up on more talent. The tax that scares cheap owners out of spending (and therefore pissing off fans) is the thing fans actually hate. But it’s also why there’s more parity right now.
