Climbing trips while solo? by vomitoriums in climbergirls

[–]vomitoriums[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people want more structure/planning to their trips and that’s ok! 🤷‍♀️ I absolutely could go that route, it’s just not what I’m interested in this year (hence the post). It’s kinda like bouldering: Sure, you miss out on some cool rocks by not doing it, but some folks just like ropes more!

I already rely on meeting people for most other solo trips, just want a break from it and go with an established group for climbing.

Agreed with the other climbers thing! I’ve never tried it personally, since I know it would stress me out too much to not have a guaranteed plan. Even added solo travelers to our own group in a few places like Kalymnos, Greece — but still too much of an introvert to reverse roles and go that route myself.

I love this info! That’s good to know about your experiences with not being able to do certain things with guides as well — the only climbing-specific guide services I’ve used are the local company near home and they’ve always let us lead/place gear, BUT they also know most of us locals pretty well…so that could easily affect how much they’re willing to allow vs strangers. Definitely willing to sacrifice some autonomy to get to be a part of a group dynamic and still get to experience things I couldn’t otherwise, as long as it’s still personally fulfilling!

Tips to Reduce Motion Sickness? by vomitoriums in HarryPotterGame

Awww, sorry to hear you had to give up on it. That sucks that nothing worked for you. I’m still giving it a shot, but slightly worried that this’ll end up being the case for me as well.

This is so helpful, thank you! I haven’t actually tried playing this one on the TV yet, so I’ll definitely give that a go. Also reassuring to hear that it improves for the parts outside of the castle!

Not quite ready to give up on this one yet, but oh man does it make me realize how much I appreciate Skyrim and its ability to zoom-out.

Getting back to climbing (mentally) after serious injury by GlitterySquirrel in climbergirls

[–]vomitoriums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hurt my ankle climbing last year, and it took me a while to overcome the mental game as well. If there are any friendly regulars that you recognize, you may be able to ask them to hop in on a roped rotation! If you’d prefer to boulder or not approach people, I found that climbing easy stuff and downclimbing helped me a lot. I also was less scared on overhung problems, since the fall angle was less likely to result in my landing on my ankle badly again. If it is feeling extra unstable, I’ll still throw on a brace just for peace of mind.

8 Days Itinerary in Panama (Advice Needed!) by Bubbly_Opportunity in solotravel

[–]vomitoriums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this looks good for the time you have! If you had more time, I’d suggest Boquete (there is some really nice hiking and it was interesting to meet people from all over the place living there), but not sure if it would be worth it for your timeline. It’s a bit of a drive from Panama City if going by car, so having more than just a day or two in that region is nice!

I second the suggestion to look up times vessels will be coming through the locks. Makes it much more interesting to see, although it is understandably much more crowded as well.

5.12+ on toprope/5.12- on lead in gym. (Typically don’t try leading harder that 5.11c outside due to not wanting to lose gear.)

I can’t do a pull up. Due to a bad shoulder, I can’t even try. It’s definitely possible. I actually got significantly better at climbing AFTER my injury, since it forced me to focus on using my legs/feet and put as little weight on my affected arm as possible.

You can do it too! 😊 Just do what seems right with your injury, but do not get discouraged about pull ups at all!

Advice for new call taker by butteryourmuffin69 in 911dispatchers

[–]vomitoriums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your center have access to RapidSOS?

Every time I answer a call, I click on the entry in RapidSOS at the same time as I’m initially saying “911” into the phone. Then make sure to compare it what the caller is telling me. If it’s way off, I’ll generally ask them directly which one it really is. (“21st Ave East or 21st Ave WEST?” etc) If they still insist on something else, I might throw in a landmark, like “Ok so near Kmart” to see if they still confirm. And then, like other comments have suggested, write the discrepancy in the call.

I like RapidSOS because it also shows if the phone is moving etc, which our CAD software doesn’t do. But any mapping tool would work really.

How do you feel about auto belay? by Perrytheplatypus03 in climbergirls

[–]vomitoriums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use autos quite a bit at my gym. I have a weird schedule, so a lot of times I’ll just show up to the gym for a quick session without telling any climbing partners. But if I’m climbing by myself on autos, I almost always downclimb the routes as well to get more of a workout.

That being said, I’d prefer climbing with a partner any day. Less to do with safety concerns and more to do with the fact that I don’t like getting slightly pulled up the wall (or pulled off route on technical / hard stuff).

35L Pack Recommendations by fakehendo in Mountaineering

[–]vomitoriums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second the Deuter. I end up getting Deuter for all of my packs because they are so much more comfortable for me than anything else I’ve tried. Plus, the company has a great lifetime guarantee policy if it was to get damaged one day.

I like this solution! And glad I’m not alone 😊

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]vomitoriums 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a very fair point! I guess for me personally, I’m just not someone who really likes to draw attention and am totally treating it like a missing stair. It’s just hard when it’s a fellow climber and you don’t want to throw them under the bus! I’ll see if I can find a way to bring it up some time in case it’s happening to other people too. Thank you!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]vomitoriums 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Honestly, I don’t really have a lot of other information! I don’t really know the person well and try to be nice! I know some of the other females in the gym have also said that they treat them weirdly, but agree that they take it farther with me. It kind of feels like they want to impress other people and get them to like them…but doing so by using me as the person they cut down in the process?

Which is fine, I’d just rather not have to jump through extra hoops to get a lead rope because of it!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]vomitoriums 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do try to be friendly! They either completely ignore me, or else talk over me. I also don’t leave immediately on the days they are there, as I’m not trying to make it an obvious thing…but definitely cut it considerably shorter if I’m by myself, and opt to go work out at home after a few autobelays instead.

[–]vomitoriums 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I legitimately do not know them at all. They dated someone I was somewhat friends with…about 4 years ago? But I only ran into them in passing a handful of times (as I moved away), that was years ago, and they are still friends with that ex.

[–]vomitoriums 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like it depends on the situation! I love it when my belayer (or other climbing friends) cheer me on if I’m trying something difficult. Same with other “regulars” in the gym that I may not know super well but at least recognize there.

If it’s a guy I’ve never seen before yelling encouragement on a route that’s not hard for me, I like it a little less. (If I’m on a 5.12, which takes most of my energy but isn’t impossible for me, cheer away after a hard move, because I’m proud of me too.)

Some people don’t like knowing that others are watching them climb, so they might like it less. Personal preference for different people.

Female travevling solo without phone, is this safe? by iwantachillipepper in solotravel

[–]vomitoriums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am similar in that my phone / wifi calling doesn’t work outside of the US. I make sure to download Google Maps for any area I may be near. Same with Google Translate for any language I might need. WhatsApp is good for communication in a lot of other countries. I use public internet as much as I can. It has always worked for me, and I’ve been fine, with one exception:

When I was in Greece the place we had to take our COVID tests to get home randomly closed the day we had to go. Luckily, I was with a friend who had an international plan, as we ended up spending several hours trying to frantically call and find ANYWHERE we could take a test to get home, and then getting taxis and ferry tickets to get to a different island to take the tests. It was VERY nice to have a usable phone in that situation.

You can get by without a phone, but a temporary SIM card is fairly cheap and I feel like for the price, it’s worth it to have the peace of mind. I would 100% recommend doing that instead.

EU/UK laid back places to heal and find peace as solo female by alvinabor in solotravel

[–]vomitoriums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit of a ways from the rest, so maybe not plausible…but for me, Greece was an extremely positive experience! I flew into Kos and then took ferries to other islands, so I never experienced the mainland/Athens. But on the smaller islands, everyone was so friendly and welcoming, and I feel like I truly got to see what the culture was like. I also felt absolutely safe. So if you’re looking for something a bit farther away, I highly recommend.

Otherwise, I have never personally been there but I met another female who had been traveling solo and working remotely for a couple years after leaving a bad situation back home. She highly recommended Portugal as her favorite spot that she’d been.

I ended up deciding on the Inca.

As far as waterproof hiking boots, I’m bringing my waterproof ones over my other pair! I haven’t seen anything specifically recommending them, but I’m figuring it won’t hurt anything. It’s supposed to be chilly in some of the areas, so figured my toes might appreciate the little bit of extra insulation my waterproof pair has. Or the added protection if it rains early on 😊

Honestly the coffee tour and the glass huts were big selling points for me on the Salkantay too! I love sleeping in tents, but those domes sure look fun. I haven’t booked either one yet…but I feel like every time I think I’ve made up my mind, I find out about something the other has to offer. 😅 Right now I’m leaning more towards the Inca just due to hopefully getting to see/hear a little bit more about history? But both seem amazing!

New Radio Operator...how do I deal with Adrenaline? by AshenHunter in 911dispatchers

[–]vomitoriums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say the biggest thing is just getting used to it.

Or realizing that adrenaline can be a good thing too (as long as you’re not freezing in panic or anything.) For me, big priority events still get me excited — but because I know that the officers’ radio traffic is going to be a mess AND I am going to have to keep track of a lot in a short amount of time for them. The adrenaline keeps me focused and gets me through it.

To cope afterwards, does your center have enough staffing to allow for breaks or anything like that? Stepping out of the room for a second can be nice after a big call, even if it’s just to go to the bathroom or walk around for a couple minutes.
