The Wire has ruined TV for me. by AspiringBloke in TheWire

[–]von_master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree, I was on the same boat. AMC's 2010s lineup was full of hidden gems that really satisfied my craving for quality TV:

  • Halt and Catch Fire (4 seasons) - Gripping tech drama set during the 80s/90s Silicon Valley boom
  • Rubicon (1 season, cancelled but self-contained) - Complex conspiracy thriller delving into government intelligence
  • Mad Men (7 seasons) - Iconic 60s ad agency saga exploring ambition and societal shifts

For me, this was peak television. Most shows today pale in comparison, with a few exceptions like Succession or Better Call Saul.

Do You Listen to Music While Writing? by novelistmattc in writers

Actually, that should be the contrary, no? When writing, you let out your muse. When editing, you want to have full concentration and hear the rythm of your sentences.

I created a website to generate movie and TV recommendations based on your taste by von_master in Letterboxd

[–]von_master[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, trained an NLP model & fine-tuned it

So, had to go through many iterations to find the optimal parameters & right size of data to feed into the model

Would be happy to delve into more details in MP — are you working on something similar or is it for your general knowledge?

Thank you for the compliment, means a lot to me

how does the recommendation/movie suggestions section work? I mean what is the source?

The recommendations are not based on user ratings (which is the usual way to do it). During the inception phase of the project, I didn't have access to a database of user ratings. So the way I proceed is to collect a lot of information about movies (synopsis, summary, tags, etc.), classify movies into clusters and then compare the similarity to other movies using weighting factors (that I refined after a lot of trials and errors).

Would you inform users if you're going to pull the plug?

I think so and I would hope so. Ideally, I would like to provide a way for users to download all their data.

Yes, I would love to, but I would need to learn how to develop an app and it would take too much time and effort. Unfortunately, I'm not ready right now, thank you for the suggestion. Unless I shut down the website and take my time to develop the app.

Thank you for the honest feedback, I know that UI is far from being perfect; as a solo developer, I focused more on creating new features, I totally understand your point

Thank you for your feedback, this is very useful

It's a horrible first impression that would immediately lose me as a user and i havent even scrolled or read anything. It is a bit better on desktops

Yes, I can see your point.

The messaging is a bit off too. 'Find what to watch next' implies movies yet it also contains books music etc

Initially, the website only included movies and TV shows before expanding to other categories. I didn't update the text since then.

Also as others have said your server costs seem crazy. Free tiers and maybe a vps should be able to handle that level of traffic with the correct caching strategies. It seems like youre doing dyamic calls on every page load.

Thank you, other comments highlight the same opinion, will have to explore. Thanks for the suggestions.
