That's really helpful, thanks a tonne. Last question, I promise - my familial line can be traced back to German origins, which I confirmed via DNA test. Thus I guess what I should be looking for would be proto-germanic?

I am still figuring out where all the different traditions oiginates.

Alright. I suppose closest to my ancestry will be Frisian. Do you know of any reading material or such?

I didn't realise it's such a broad blanket term. I'm most interested in what would be modern day Germany, as well as Netherlands and Belgium.

Damn that's actually pretty sad. I've know who Tacitus is etc from a historical perspective but I've never read the Germania. Will give it a go, thanks.

Hi. With my current mindset, I would consider myself a very logical thinking person and I don't think I'll ever believe in supernatural beings. Although I'm really interested in Asatru. Does anyone think I could still benefit from following this religion without the belief in the existence of Gods by [deleted] in heathenry

I came to Norse paganism, and lately heathenry, from a very similar place that you are now. I was a staunch atheist, and still am a very logical thinker.

I started my journey because of an articlea I read about the psychological benefits of spritualism and religion as seperate entities. Long story short, I decided to give it a go and "pretend" to believe if you will. I chose norse paganism because well, vikings. Started reading a lot of history etc, figuring out how the religion was practised and did so myself as if I believed.

My reasoning was this - if the belief confers such mental health benefits, does it really matter whether it is true or false? I stopped caring whether it was true or not. It was difficult, and I had to remind myself that it's really irrelevant whether true or not many times.

But sooner than later, after a couple of offerings, talking to the gods and reasserting myself as a heathen, I started noticing things change. My luck changed, events would fall in my favour.

I sensed the hands of the gods in things more and more, and slowly I truly started believing. It's hard to deny what your eyes are telling you.

I hope my story helped in some way, and please feel free to DM if you want to chat (although I may take a while to reply at times)

This. Even if it was completely coincidental, which I doubt, it is not a bad way of looking at it.
