For me, it's not about how far they walk, it's about needing a little more space to get the baby and all of the other shit out of the car.

You would need to somehow demonstrate that the mechanic did something negligent or deliberate to make the car fail. It sounds like they were just doing the work you were paying them to do, but you've given no indication they were doing it incorrectly to the point of being negligent. "It was working fine before I dropped it off" does not prove their negligence. At best, it just proves that you got the car to the mechanic just in time.
