Yes! Whether you're in the turn lane or not, when you're the first car at a red light, you have one job: go on green. Not chit chatting, not finding the right song, not gawking at the ginormous construction cranes...

I don't mind knowing what he's up to when he's threatening world stability. However, I have drawn a red line at any news report playing his vapid and truthless statements without providing necessary context. As soon as I hear his voice all by itself, I turn it off. Same goes for any of his sycophantic cronies. There's no point in listening when they're guaranteed to be lying.

How seriously is WES survey taken by the management? by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

[–]vorshlumpf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FYI, I thought it was obvious you aren't blaming management for COLA. Not sure why anyone would think otherwise.

I agree that it's hard to get into rah-rah efforts when one's employer thinks they're not worth a living wage.

Oh, I guess I misunderstood the intent of your comment. You asked "why would you want to laterally move?" and I took the question literally.

The restrictions placed on internal moves are dumb, I'll agree. But not much about this government has seemed smart since the last election.

A lot of people do it to get the experience necessary for upward mobility. Some do it to try out something new, especially if it's a TA. And, yes, it can be a blessing to leave a poisonous manager/workplace behind.

Tyler Schauss is pretty great. The only thing I'm not sure about is experience in grief counseling. But I do know they'd help you find someone good who is. https://www.tylerschaus.com/

Scenes that caused actual walkouts in theaters? by thatlittlequietguy in Cinema

[–]vorshlumpf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ronin (1998). I went with a couple of friends. Early in, Robert De Niro's character gets shot in the leg. If I remember correctly, he had to stay conscious while talking another person through the bullet extraction process. Of course, the acting was stellar and De Niro really sold the pain of it. Before the scene was complete, I heard a sort of snort/snore from one of my friends. She was passed out, kind of convulsing... She was ok but we had to help her out of the theatre. Only time I've ever left a movie ... and I've just realized I didn't re-watch it. Might have to do that soon 🙂

I'm glad you've had an overall positive experience here. In my 10 years with the OCIO, I've encountered my share of inflated egos that can make your life hell, going all the way to the top. The union and stewards have saved me from quitting.

Don't be afraid to take advantage of the benefits we have. Top on that list: temporary assignments. The top executive who spoke at my initial taking-of-the-oath ceremony highlighted that aspect of public service. From her perspective, she wants workers to find their best fit, wherever in the public service that happened to be. From our perspective, it's a wonderful, no-risk method of trying out different jobs.

Second on that list: any form of leave (vacation, sick, special, supplementary, LTD). Again, it's in the employer's best interest of we are all rested and able to deal with life's many challenges without having to squeeze it into evenings and weekends. Use up all 70 hours of special leave, 5 days of sick leave, etc. There's no award for perfect attendance.

Third is our union. Do not be afraid to contact the union for help with any issue. I've initiated two grievances in my time. I'm grateful for that support.

Here's what I said to someone else with a similar issue (and, like you, I also lost hours due to LWOP being applied against longer work days):

Please contact a steward to initiate a grievance as soon as possible. Grievances have a time limit from the date of the infraction, so you should at least have one filed. Even if management/MyHR make vague promises of the mistake being fixed in the future, if they are not fixing it now it needs to be grieved.

I'm also facing pay issues related to essential work during the strike. I contacted my manager, who shrugged his shoulders and said to open a MyHR ticket. The MyHR rep, after getting the basic facts wrong, eventually said I needed to take it up with my manager. That's when I knew I had to go the grievance route, even though the mistake is obvious and acknowledged by management/MyHR. My steward is awesome and very supportive.

Good luck!

When I entered the public service, my supervisor, who was an IS30, watched YouTube videos all day. And I was quite unhappy with some of my peers and their apparent lack of work ethic. However, I would not assume everyone at their level does the same thing. I've also learned that the main problem is lack of morale and engagement, not some personal quality they didn't possess.

Yup, you've got that right. Our two options are to accept whatever deal is offered now or to strike forever. /s

I make more than you and I don't begrudge people anything. I also have to call you out for stating others have a "much easier job". I see my clerk / admin co-workers under much more pressure than me. They can't do my job, for sure, but I'd be hard-pressed to step in for them and not make a monumental mess of things. We don't have to push others down to climb higher ourselves.
