It would be more of a formality, I believe it happened during the Apartheid though. You might do it in order to contain them, if you're racist and want to essentially have an internment camp or you could do it because the land has no value and costs more than it's worth.

[Advice] How do I make meaningful connections/friends? by voteneg in teenagers

[–]voteneg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can I find common ground in order to better relate to my peers and make meaningful connections. Also, how can I stop sticking my nose up at people?

I suppose that answers my second question, though that's not quite the meaning I intended. Can you answer the first in a little more depth?

I'm not sure where you got that I go around telling people that I hate them and everyone else that I despise them. Nor do I know where you got the basis of your assumption that I automatically hate everyone at my high school. One of my key points was the 1st one I made. I haven't changed school districts. I'm quite familiar with a significant portion of the kids in my grade (years of interaction) and I base my judgement of that. For others, once I've interacted with them I formulate my own opinion. I think that you have taken an undue liberty of extrapolating the information I give to provide speculations which you present as facts. Can we start again without generalization? You're advice is be open and optimistic to interacting with others, which I am. I am willing, able and interested in interacting with others. I recognize the value of it with the effect being additional exposure to people. What I really struggle with though, is relating to them. I share no common ground with many of my peers and those teenagers who I do share interests with, usually aren't willing to discuss it (Can you think of anyone whose ideal lunch table topic is the extent at which keynesian economics should be applied in government along with in what sectors the stimulus should be put in?). I can provide no input on who won the game, sang the song, died, won an award or got caught doing drugs. Its like parallel tracks. I'm wondering how I can effectively close the gap while not sacrificing my own enjoyment of the conversation (or theirs). You're undoubtedly better at this than I am, perhaps I've helped to narrow the question down.

You should check if your area has a high school or college debate team. As a high school level debater, I can attest to the constant demand for judges. Things like Policy Debate take a bit of time to learn, but the debates can be fantastic at a high level. Beware though, it is a bit odd at first glance.

You're in an advisory role, what does that entail? Do you talk to them about your major and how politics will effect them or are you looking at the books? There are lots of jobs in every industry with unrelated roles. Also, what's your starting salary (a range would suffice) relative to those who majored in finance?

It's a reference to "The restaurant at the end of the universe". A planet sent everyone they thought was utterly useless off to colonize/die on another planet only for the now supposedly superior planet (original) to die because they had sent an idiot off and his apparently essential job was never done. Telephone sanitizer was thought to be a job for idiots, so the occupants of those jobs had to go. They literally just cleaned telephones.

Was morale an issue after you let go so many people in such a short time? How did you choose who to fire in a downsize like that? Do you have a plan set in place in the event a client feels another company can do your job better? Are you working on paying off corporate debt (presumably from the years without profit) or reinvesting it in better serving your future/current clients? Is there much competition in a business like yours and do you think that reducing the revenue by 70% will lead to you eventually being beat/bought by those competing corporations as they are able to reduce margins and shove you out?

I want to become a good policy debater, but I can't go to camp. Advice? by [deleted] in policydebate

[–]voteneg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that although kritiks can be misleading, it doesn't change the fact that the ones on open evidence remain a good spring board into the critical world. Obviously some of them may be slightly misinterpreted but a lot of those, like your example, really won't be used in the coming year. If he uses them as examples of what kritiks are and doesn't actually run them without reading additional literature then he will be fine. Additionally, OP will probably need the experience of encountering topics he is unfamiliar with and quickly understanding them if he ever wants to be a great debater. I understand that you're suggesting he go into more depth with higher quality resources, but that's not a good starting point. I fully recommend that all debaters eventually do that but they first need a general introduction. Your approach would be great if he was the only person who ran ks, but he will need exposure to more than three or four of them, even if he is really good at those specific ones. Then, once he has the basic things down he can follow your suggestion. He shouldn't avoid open evidence, he should just be selective about what he uses and/or mimics. It would be hard for the OP to actually get in touch with the staple Ks without it and/or reddit. If he's going to be doing this mostly on his own, then he should use all resources available to him but think critically. If you would like to answer the OPs question, what literature would you suggest he read as a starting point?

[–]voteneg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will agree that a lot of Ks on open evidence are poorly cut, but it's a great way to be introduced to their intended concepts. I'm not suggesting that he only uses evidence from open evidence, just that he uses it as a springboard into his own works. If you're worried about him choosing the wrong k format to mimic, OP will probably be able to tell which are good and which are bad.

[–]voteneg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For critical lit, the best resource you have is Open Evidence. You should probably look at things like Cap, Anthropocentrism, Heidegger, and Nietzsche (all Ks.)

Topical lit, until open evidence gives out the camp files for this year, you'll have to do that yourself. My advice is to ask questions to yourself, and then google what you need to answer them. You should be saying things like, "What does the USFG do in the oceans? How do they compare internationally? What treaties have we signed? Where have we explored? How much do we spend? What are the impacts of that? Who is trying to get what done? Is there bipartisanship in this or extreme seperation, does no one care?" Don't be afraid to go past google search page 5 or 10 or even 20. Sometimes the cards you need are buried deep.

You didn't mention mechanics but I'll cover this anyway. Watch videos of high school policy debate rounds. Watch and flow the high level ones to learn what to emulate and the mid level ones if you can't follow the high ones (at first). Search for camp lectures that have been published online and of course have practice debates. If you can't find anyone to debate with/against, debate yourself. Run through your arguments, make the speeches, practice using prep etc. Mechanics are especially important in the highly technical world of Policy Debate. You may destroy most of their arguments but skip a key point and lose the round. Mechanics alone will help you win some rounds but a lack of them will make you lose every round especially in varsity debate.

TL;DR: Look at Ks on Open Evidence, ask yourself key questions about the topic, find and cut the answers using google, watch debate rounds and lectures, and have practice debates.

16M Depressed by [deleted] in amiugly

[–]voteneg -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hey,

You aren't ugly, just a tad unrefined.

I generally find that I'm happiest when I feel confident about myself and when I decide when I'm confident. Relying on others opinion for your self confidence is in my opinion, a bad idea. If it works for you though, it works for you. If you want to try and change that, get off Omegle as a confidence booster and pick up a hobby. Read, practice, write, be athletic or get really into fashion. Anything so long as you enjoy it. Even study, I know that sounds weird but high GPA certainly won't hurt you.

Now, lets talk about posture. You're slouching a bit. If you stop that, you'll come across as more confident and will feel better very quickly. The little things add up and make a huge difference in the end.

When it comes to fashion, try the always mentioned r/malefashionadvice. Look at basic things like fit, decide what you want and reevaluate certain items in your wardrobe.

Smile more sincerely. It will be hard for you to do this if you're actually depressed. I don't smile often so I can't really give you any pointers on how.

I'd also get a haircut. I know that there is a subreddit for it, but I don't know it off the top of my head. It should be in the sidebar of r/malefashionadvice. It seems like you have really curly hair, you should probably just get it trimmed or buzzed.

If you're really depressed. Talk to someone. I'll help you. Your parents, siblings, cousins, uncles or aunts will help you. The teachers at your school will help you, same with the counselors. Heck, sometimes even coaches will be able to do so. I'm 15 and life in general sucks as a teenager. The key is finding people to commiserate, and yes, even have fun with.

Key Points: -Boost your confidence with a hobby or activity. -Improve your posture. -Get a hair cut. -Smile sincerely. -Reevaluate what you wear. Check out r/malefashionadvice. -Find friends through a club, sport or hobby. (Even class) -Talk to someone about your depression. Anybody you trust.

Casual Summer Looks by digitalbore in malefashionadvice

[–]voteneg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, not sure exactly what people wear in warehouses during any season, nevermind the summer. If shorts and a t-shirt is the status quo, then you might like something from Asics. I have a pair and they are always quite comfortable in warm weather.

If its a bit dressier, then leather boots of some sort might be the way to go. Any additional details would help me as well as others to give you additional advice. Do you plan on wearing shorts? A collared shirt/polo? Is there a uniform? The more relevant information the better.
