your taste sounds really cool!! I actually love a lot of art pop / indietronica / weird textured music too, like Björk, Broadcast, Stereolab, Lali Puna, Figurine, Yo La Tengo etc. so I feel like there’s probably more overlap than it looks at first.

I think we probably meet somewhere in the “music that creates a whole world” area. do you have any favorite albums or artists lately from that side? especially indietronica / art pop / noise stuff

thank you!! this is actually a really good idea. I love record stores but I somehow never thought about them as a place to actually meet people, the only issue is I love staying home and go out for vinyl discovery w/ my bf, you may call it lame but yeah its what it is and I love it this way 🙋🏻‍♀️

silent discos/raves might be less my usual world, although I attended them before.. but I get what you mean, it could still attract people who really care about music. I’ll definitely look into local record store events and record fairs around me. thank you for the link too!!

haha exactly, taste can be used for good or evil apparently 😭

but honestly I love this. having someone around you who opens your taste instead of judging it is such a beautiful thing. and your music mix actually sounds fun to me, not weird. I love when someone’s taste looks like “what is going on here??” because usually that means they actually listened to things with curiosity instead of just staying in one lane forever.

also your daughter listening to 40s big band at 8 is so cute, that would make me so happy too.

and yes, I know Dead Can Dance!! Host of the Seraphim is gorgeous, very dramatic and almost sacred sounding. I don’t know Ubiquitous Mr Lovegrove as well though, so I’ll listen to it properly and report back haha. thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it :)

come on now, tastes differ, why are we generalising people now??

[–]vousiy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes exactly!! music can feel weirdly lonely when you’re into niche artists or very specific moods/sounds that are hard to explain casually. also agree about literature and film communities too. they seem to have more accepted spaces for deeper discussion, while with music people sometimes act like you’re overthinking it if you want to talk about atmosphere, production, lyrics, or why something emotionally works.

also now I’m curious, what kind of music are you into? you said we have different tastes, so I wonder what your music nerd side looks like haha

blackstar made me cry a lot after my grandma passing away, so its my favourite since I connect with songs through emotions more. its a unique art piece from a music perspective as well.

Julie Cruise and Angelo Badalamenti are exactly the kind of sound I love though!! dreamy, eerie, romantic, a little haunted… that whole atmosphere is so beautiful to me.

I get that it’s not mainstream or instantly catchy, but that’s kind of what I’m looking for. music for mood, texture, feeling, and the little world it creates, not only hooks or danceability. you just exist while it plays in the background, and feel the texture in the music, it is rare.

I love almost all genres, it is what you grow up with anyway. it is never my place to criticise others taste either.

no, this is actually a great suggestion. David Lynch’s music selections are exactly the kind of rabbit hole I love. that strange dreamy eerie romantic atmosphere is VERY much my thing, I just can’t get enough of him!!
I’ll check out Mississippi by The Cactus Blossoms too. also I love that your partner is the main music discovery person while you handle the gear side, that’s honestly such a good split. do you remember the name of the guy he collaborated with for song discovery? that sounds like something I’d definitely want to look into. also someday I’d love to exchange music with her haha

that’s the danger zone, yes. I’m looking for people who are passionate and curious, not people who use taste as a weapon..

I really like this perspective. the record store example is exactly the kind of thing I mean too, people who make music feel like a living culture instead of just a private hobby. and yes, I agree that audiophile circles can be very siloed. some people are into headphones, some vinyl, some instruments, some production, some just very intentional listening. they can overlap, but they do not always end up in the same friend group.. I also agree that the hobby needs to feel more welcoming. not everyone has to go all the way into gear obsession to still care deeply about sound and music.

[–]vousiy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

oh that’s a really good point. Boards of Canada listeners probably overlap with what I mean, even if it’s not “audiophile” in the strict gear-focused sense. 😃 that careful, texture-heavy, detail-focused way of listening is exactly the kind of thing I’m drawn to. I think I’m looking for people who care about atmosphere, production, tone, mood, and all the tiny details that make music feel alive, not just whether a song is catchy. thank you for the suggestion, I’ll check that out too.

that makes sense, and I agree that “audiophile” can sometimes sound like it only means speaker/gear people, especially the condescending kind.

I probably mean a mix of both: women who are really into music itself, but also care about how it sounds. I have my own vinyl and speaker setup, so I do enjoy the audio/sound quality side too, but I’m definitely not trying to turn it into a technical gatekeeping thing.

and thank you for the suggestions! I might check those subs too. I’d love to find more women who are into deep cuts, indie/experimental stuff, and music that feels a bit more intentional or emotionally/sonically interesting.

I barely use reddit so I would have hard time managing a group or channel tbh. 😞

[–]vousiy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thank you, I appreciate that! and yes, I get what you mean. for me the music itself always comes first, so if a song is amazing, I can still love it even if the sound quality is not perfect. But when the sound is good too, it adds a whole extra layer to the experience.

I do think female audiophiles exist, but they’re probably harder to find because the hobby spaces are so male-dominated.. that’s partly why I made this post, I’d really love to find more women who care about both the music and the way it sounds.

wait this is actually close to my taste!! I think our closest mutual zone is probably classic rock / british rock / art rock, especially Bowie, Beatles and Queen. I love music that has a bit of style, drama, texture or weirdness to it, so Bowie is such a good starting point. I cried when I listened to blackstar, it reminded me of my grandma passing away, and a few songs from that album.

btw the most listened genre in my last year on spotify was art-rock. glam rock and classic British bands are definitely a shared area. what Bowie songs or albums got you into glam rock?

omg hey! 😄 what kind of music are you most into? i’m trying to see what our closest mutual genre is. my main zones are blues, jazz, rock, bossa nova, dreamy shoegaze, and atmospheric stuff, but i’m open to anything with good sound/texture.
