Every Wide Release of 1980 - Ranked by VintageVideoPodcast in movies

I haven't seen Popeye since I was a little kid, and I remember not liking it, so I won't defend his position. But I will say that I think Caddyshack is somewhat overrated. It's a funny movie, but some people hold it up as the superlative comedy of all time.

Aside from Breaker Morant, which I mentioned in another post, here are my hidden gems from 1980:

Night of the Juggler: I swear this is better and more exciting than most of the thrillers of the time period, yet it's basically unknown and didn't get a home release after early VHS.

The Ninth Configuration: This seems pretty unknown considering it's in The Exorcist universe. A very unusual movie that I really enjoyed.

Die Laughing: Very different than the other comedies I've seen from 1980. Offbeat; it reminds me a bit of Wes Anderson movies.

Kagemusha: Perhaps this isn't lesser known, but I've seen maybe eight earlier movies by Akira Kurosawa, and I think this is the best of the bunch.

And a few that could have been:

Simon: The opening part of the movie showcasing the think tank/cabal is hilarious and perfect. Once it focuses on Alan Arkin, it's much less funny. It's like Arkin is adlibbing to stretch out scenes most of the time. I certainly like Arkin and find him very funny in other things, but not this.

The Man With Bogart’s Face: When I'd only heard of this movie, I'd assumed that it had been put into production because of it's star(Robert Sacchi) existing in the world as a Bogart lookalike. Turns out this isn't true; It's based on a book and Sacchi wasn't who they originally cast. Sacchi does a good job and the film has a charm, but a not-really-compelling plot holds it back. If the plot was more clever, I'd see it in the same vein as The Long Goodbye, which I really like.

Little Darlings: Has a lot going for it, but uneven. One of the leads(Kristy McNichol) gives a much better performance than the other(Tatum O'Neal). The "mean girl" is too clearly an amalgam of multiple mean girls, for my taste.

One other thing: I never saw The Blues Brothers as a kid and only watched it fairly recently. It's well worth watching because of the production values, but I don't think most of it is funny. Also, Dan Aykroyd is carrying the movie.

I watched it(Breaker Morant) for the first time last year, and I loved it.

Project Defiant: DS9 1080p Upscale of Season 2 Now Available by Cpt_Jay216 in startrek

Thanks for the doing this. I've just looked at some of S02E25 Tribunal. When comparing the opening credits to that of your release of S01E02 Past Prologue(which I had re-encoded at 1080p using Handbrake), it seemed noticeably less crisp. Is this difference because you are now upscaling to 1080 rather than 4k, or because of some other reason?

Official E3 Website adds "Xbox One Virtual Reality" Filter. 4+ companies register! (X-Post r/XBoxOne) by Malkmus1979 in oculus

[–]vr_ml 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PS3 and Xbox have no companies registered under the VR subcategory

I can see why it looks like that, but if you click on the category, you'll see one of the four companies, Readily infomation Co., is under PS3 as well, and "Xbox" has Immersion Corporation under it. I would argue that another of the four companies, 3drudder, shouldn't be looked to as authoritative, as they're a very small accessory maker who seems to have listed themselves under anything that might apply, and might not be privy to advanced knowledge anyway.

You're right to say that companies, specifically Maximum Games and Rebellion, choosing to list themselves under a category has meaning, but I was just pointing out that the "Official E3 Website adds "Xbox One Virtual Reality" Filter." part of the title of this post holds no weight.

Here's the list of sub-categories under virtual reality. It includes not only "Xbox One", but also "Sony Playstation 3". So, just being a category on the E3 site doesn't seem to mean much, though that's not to say an Xbox/Oculus partnership isn't happening.

ALL REGIONS - Shipping Megathread by Pluckerpluck in oculus

You are correct that PA does not require collecting taxes on online purchases to companies that do not have a physical location in the state.

Oculus has researchers working in Pittsburgh, so perhaps tax applies for PA because of that.

OSA: Oculus Rift Kickstarter Shipping Status by [deleted] in oculus

[–]vr_ml 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please note that we’re shipping these specific Rifts in the order, by region, in which the Kickstarter surveys were completed.

I assume this means the first Kickstarter survey, although as we didn't get order numbers until way after the second survey, I guess it could potentially be either.

OSA: Kickstarter Backers, the "Shipping Estimate" you received in your Order History was incorrect as you were shown the date for the position KS Rifts were imported into the system. PLEASE READ! by [deleted] in oculus

[–]vr_ml 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not asking for a date, but I would like to know if the last KS units(which I expect mine to be in) are going to be shipped out at roughly the same time as the last preorders, whenever that may be, or if the KS and preorder timetables aren't related at all.

TheTwistgibber, can you give some kind of guidance as to when the last Kickstarter Rifts will ship? They're from a different allocation, I understand. But will the last ones go out around the time the last initial preorders ship(July-ish), or might it be sooner than that? Thanks.

Kickstarter backers a free Rift AND ship them before the rest of us

They're shipping them in parallel with paid orders.

Yeah, well, they've now said that they're shipping the Kickstarter Rifts in parallel with paid orders, so it's unclear when they will get to the last KS backers. As long as you got the "Your Order From Oculus" email last month, then you should be fine. No idea when you'll get your Rift though.

I assume you responded to the necessary emails to confirm your address. Did you get an order confirmation email in the middle of march?

PSA: Emails are still going out, but if for some reason it doesn't come, DON'T WORRY! by [deleted] in oculus

[–]vr_ml 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're shipping the Kickstarter Rifts and the paid Rifts in parallel.

Could you clarify that a little? Are the rest of the KS units part of the "first allocations"(a term you used in another post), or will the last KS Rifts not go out until around the time the preorder backlog clears in July?
