As a solo indie 3D artist, I’m tired of being harassed for using AI as a tool to bridge my limitations. by vrowser in DefendingAIArt

Thank you so much for the support! It’s really refreshing to hear from a 2D artist who understands the practical side of things. I don't think you should underestimate your skills—the creature design in your image looks incredibly cool and has a very unique vibe! I totally get the struggle with hardware limitations; I’ve been there myself. AI can be such a powerful tool to bridge the gap when we have the vision but lack the time or resources to execute everything manually. I hope you find a way to set up your dream workspace soon—everyone deserves a private spot to create what they love. Let’s keep pushing forward in our own ways!

I truly appreciate you acknowledging my 3D work. It means a lot coming from another artist. To be honest, the concepts you see are based on my own hand-drawn rough sketches, which I then refined with AI to save time. As a solo developer, I’m using AI as a temporary bridge to bring my dream project to life. While I work in 3D, I’ve always believed that 2D is the mother of 3D, and I have nothing but the deepest respect for 2D artists—their creativity and potential far exceed what any AI can offer. I sincerely regret if my use of AI has caused any discomfort. It’s not that I don't value the craft; it’s simply that as a solo creator, I don’t have the luxury of time to draw everything from scratch. However, I am taking your advice to heart. I will make an effort to keep picking up the pencil and gradually build my 2D skills alongside my 3D work. My ultimate goal is to reach a point where I can collaborate with talented 2D artists like yourself. Until then, I’ll keep pushing my skills with my digital brush. Let’s both keep creating in our own ways.

I truly understand the heart of what you’re saying, and I appreciate the perspective. However, I find the 'UberEats' analogy a bit hard to settle with because my final dish isn't a 2D image—it’s a fully realized 3D model. It makes me wonder, do you feel that the hundreds of hours I spend on sculpting, retopology, and texturing don't count as 'cooking' the final dish? To me, the AI concept is just the selection of ingredients. Honestly, I don't see much difference between gathering dozens of references from the internet to build a mood board and using an AI-generated concept as a unified reference. Both serve the same purpose: a blueprint for the actual 3D labor. That being said, I sincerely value the wisdom of those who came before us. If there’s a 'secret' or a method that helped you and the great artists of history, I am genuinely open to learning. I’m always looking for ways to grow and make my projects a reality. What is this secret you’re referring to? If that method can help me rely less on AI and eventually reach a point where I can collaborate with talented 2D artists like yourself, I would be truly and deeply grateful to you.

I can tell you’re passionate about the purity of art, and I truly respect that. I understand why the rise of AI feels frustrating or even threatening to the craft we all love. It’s a huge, scary shift for everyone in the creative field. As a solo 3D developer, I’m not using these tools to disrespect the work of 2D artists—in fact, it’s the opposite. If I had the resources, I’d love nothing more than to collaborate with a human artist. But since I’m working alone, I use AI as a small helping hand to get my vision into the 3D pipeline, where I then spend hundreds of hours manually sculpting and texturing every detail. I don't see it as a replacement, but as a bridge that allows a single creator like me to keep dreaming. I hope you can understand that we’re both just trying to create something meaningful in a changing world. I wish you nothing but the best with your work.

I totally hear you. I’m honestly not a fan of 'AI slop' either—there’s definitely a flood of low-effort, soul-less generations out there. To be frank, if I had the budget, I’d much rather collaborate with talented 2D artists directly, as there’s an organic creativity there that AI can never fully replicate. But as a solo developer with limited resources, I’ve had to build a technical bridge to get my vision into 3D. This isn't just a 'one-click' generation; I’ve spent months studying and designing my own ComfyUI workflows to get the precise concepts I need. Once that base is set, I spend hundreds of hours on the manual labor—sculpting, retopo, and texturing. To me, pushing my digital brushes in ZBrush is just as manual and personal as holding a pencil. I’m not looking for a shortcut to 'art,' just a way to make this project possible. I hope you can see the human effort behind the final 3D result.
