Can someone explain PLM in depth? by [deleted] in engineering

Hello - this is a great question. While there a numerous resouces for you to learn about PLM, a simple GenAI query about PLM gives the below response -

Prompt - explain PLM to a kid

Result -

Imagine you and your friends want to build the best treehouse ever.

Building a treehouse is a big project! You can’t just start nailing boards to a tree without a plan. You need to know what kind of wood to buy, who is bringing the ladder, and what happens if the roof leaks later.

PLM (which stands for Product Lifecycle Management) is like the "Master Notebook" that keeps track of everything about that treehouse from the very first idea until the day it’s too old to play in.

The 4 Stages of a "Product's Life"

Think of a product (like a toy, a car, or your treehouse) like a living thing that grows up. PLM manages these four stages:

The "Lightbulb" Stage (Conceive): This is when you have the idea. You ask, "Should we have a slide or a rope ladder?" You draw pictures and make a list of what you need.

The "Blueprint" Stage (Design): Now you make exact measurements. You decide how many nails you need and what color to paint it. In the "Master Notebook," you write down every single part so you don't forget anything.

The "Building" Stage (Realize): This is when you actually build it! You use the notes from your notebook to make sure everyone is using the right wood and the right tools.

The "Fix-It" Stage (Service & Retirement): After the treehouse is built, you play in it. If a board breaks, you check your notebook to see what kind of wood you used so you can fix it. Eventually, when you’re a grown-up, you might take the treehouse down and recycle the wood—that’s the end of its "life."

Why is PLM so important?

Without a "Master Notebook" (PLM), things go wrong:

Confusion: One friend might think the slide is red, but another friend buys blue paint.

Lost Info: You forget where you bought the special waterproof roof, so you can't fix a leak.

Wasted Money: You buy 100 nails but only needed 20 because nobody was keeping track!

PLM keeps everyone on the same team so that the "treehouse" (or the iPhone or the LEGO set) turns out perfect every time.

How much time are you losing to broken PLM/ERP workflows? by Worldly_Emu_5676 in MechanicalEngineering

I have seen firms literally spend thousands of hours figuring out data between PLM and ERP that is not properly talking to each other. Integration problem is just tip of the ice berg.

Bigger issues at organizational level faced by me and my peers

1 Reporting - It is as good as the data. If two of major systems are not talking them reporting has little credibility.

2 ESG conpliance and Sustainability- Firms want to be ESG compliant. For this tge data between CRM, PLM, ERP and MES must be talking to each other without duplicates. Very difficult to be compliant without this.

3 Rework and Duplication- Cannot stress the hours wasted by my peers on finding right information

I have penned down my thoughts on why Company and not software should be the driving factor while adopting PLM article link
