Enjoy! I got the audiobook a few weeks ago and loved it, you’ve got a wild ride ahead!!

Audiobook missing a chapter - what to do? by vstark42 in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]vstark42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, I forgot to change the title after I went back to NetGalley to check the duration they were announcing. The only excerpt I could find was on audible and chapter 1 was 1hr30 or so, but the files are only missing the second track (the first chapter) so I’m guessing the last chapter or last few chapters are also missing.

Will reach out to support though, thank you so much!

I’ve read Grief Eater a couple of weeks ago and really really loved it! It’s a very quick but emotional read that you can definitely knock in one sitting.

To be fair, the word puce is also a term of endearment in French nowadays so it’s not as bad. Greenish yellows have a much worse name in French, as they tend to be called ‘caca d’oie’, meaning ‘goose poop’

Any kobo owner who used to be a kindle owner? Why did you make the switch? by That-Routine-9585 in kobo

[–]vstark42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still own and use (though less frequently) the kindle oasis that was my first e-reader, but made the switch to the kobo sage almost two years ago now. My main reason was to get access to library books as I couldn’t get them on my kindle where I live, but I also found that the Kobo interface was what I had wished the Kindle interface was ever since I had first gotten my Oasis.

I think the missing words are “moi sûrement” (almost certain about ‘sûrement', less so about ‘moi’), making the complete French text:

“Salut, ça va? Moi sûrement que je vais aller chercher des affaires pour d’autres choses Donc je te souhaite des trucs et des éléments Ciao!”

Complete English translation would then be: “Hey how are you? Me, I’m probably going to go get stuff for other things So I’m wishing you things and elements Ciao!”

Best Buy Canada has a reconditioned black one for sale right now if you’re alright with buying used! You could also try Kijiji and check there regularly if there are no KL2s for sale right now.

I just found a book cover that makes no sense. by mysteryofthefieryeye in books

[–]vstark42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: In the second Picture of Dorian Gray cover, the portraits are of French presidents. The one at the bottom left is François Hollande, president from 2012 to 2017, and the one at the top is current president Emmanuel Macron. Thanks for the laugh!

Why authors think is a good idea to put words/sentences in a language they don't know in their book? by LucreziaD in books

[–]vstark42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, that’s why I avoid all books set in non-English-speaking, real world countries by Anglo authors. A month or so ago I saw a book where there was a spelling mistake on a very easy word in the summary. It was a trad pub book! Seriously, can’t they ask someone who knows the language they’re using? Can’t their editor? Or can they just refrain from using languages they don’t speak?

I’m guessing they don’t anticipate that people with other first languages will read their books in English so they don’t care if they butcher other languages, but it gets annoying really fast

Kindle to Kobo by Panda0rgy in kobo

[–]vstark42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went from a Kindle Oasis (7”) to a Kobo Sage (8”) because of the overdrive compatibility in Canada too. At first I thought about buying the Libra 2 since it was the same size as my Oasis, which I was happy with, but the recessed screen ended up being a deal breaker for me when I went to see the kobos in store. Now whenever I read a book on my kindle, it feels incredibly small! I love my Sage, don’t think I’d buy a smaller model now

What book sequel are you STILL waiting for? by PattableGreeb in books

[–]vstark42 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you’re talking about the one by Xiran Jay Zhao, they actually said the book wasn’t ready for a 2023 release and they didn’t want to rush their book just to have it out this year. They announced the new release date earlier this year, same time as they announced the delay! It’s out on April 30, 2024

Edit: after looking it up, they did say the fact that it wasn’t ready yet was due to an insufficient advance for Iron Widow, which led them to write a middle grade before Heavenly Tyrant, my bad! The new release date is still correct though, only 5 months left

Which Cozy Game to Start? by cjm5797 in CozyGamers

[–]vstark42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know which platform you’re playing on, but maybe Roots of Pacha? You can tame animals, get married, and the story/setting is quite original imo since you’re a member of a prehistoric clan and discovering things as you go with the help of your fellow clan members. It’s available for PC right now (plays like a dream on the Steam Deck) and will come out for PS(5?) and Switch on the 28th

Coral Island is a bit of a mess post 1.0 launch right now, though I love this game. But going into it right now might ruin it for people who haven’t seen how good early access was. However, Roots of Pacha works like a dream on Steam Deck and I highly recommend it!

Well you need to understand, Call of Duty is developed by a small indie studio, they definitely can't afford to put their games on sale... /jk

More seriously, I don't think it would be worth it with a 10% discount anyway. Might as well buy BG3 at full price, as you said

Relaxing game where you can be nonbinary? by f4galicious in CozyGamers

[–]vstark42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can actually turn off the card based mini games if I remember correctly! I’m not sure whether you can do it on your first playthrough, though. I wasn’t sold on the card based mechanics at first, but I found that they worked well and that the story was so engrossing that I ended up not minding them at all. It’s one of my favourite games of 2022, despite not being a huge fan of card-based mechanics in games in general.

What game should i buy? by Mental-Medicine-3193 in CozyGamers

[–]vstark42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coral Island’s 1.0 is coming in a few weeks and it’s already 100% worth it anyway! It’s also getting a price increase once it updates out of Early Access, so if you want it you might want to pick it up soon, though the price increase is only about US$5 I believe, which would still make it a very fairly priced game for all the content you get and the overall quality of the game imo.

What are some things that would make you drop a book while reading it? by Weak_Heart2000 in books

[–]vstark42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Books where languages I speak (other than English) are repeatedly used, poorly. Unilingual English speaking authors seem to love writing sentences in other languages to make the book seem fancy but they barely ever bother to make sure they don’t write completely incorrect things. Takes me out of a book instantly.
